Area A1 lies within VHF DSC range of at least one coast station, commonly some twenty to thirty miles offshore. Area A2 extends to MF DSC coverage, often around one hundred miles. Area A3 is the region covered by recognised geostationary satellite services, approximately between 70 degrees North and 70 degrees South, and area A4 is everything remaining, essentially the polar regions, where HF equipment is required.
