Definition
A satellite receiver resolves position by measuring ranges to four or more satellites, solving for latitude, longitude, altitude and clock offset. Typical horizontal accuracy for civil single-frequency GPS is within about 10 metres, improved to a few metres with SBAS augmentation. The fix must be checked against the chart datum in use, as receivers output WGS84 while older charts may be on a local datum. Good practice records GNSS position in the log at regular intervals to support dead reckoning if signal is lost.
