Definition
Satellite signals reach the surface at extremely low power, well below the natural noise floor, so even a low-power interfering transmitter can deny reception over many miles. Symptoms include a sudden loss of fix, wildly reduced satellite count, or a frozen position, often affecting several vessels in the same area simultaneously. Prudent practice is to keep a parallel fix by radar, visual bearings and a running echo sounder, and to report the outage.
