Definition
The graticule is the network of meridians and parallels drawn according to the projection, distinguished from a rectangular grid which is a plane coordinate overlay. On a Mercator chart the graticule is rectangular, with meridians evenly spaced and parallels widening poleward. Subdivided borders allow positions to be read to a tenth of a minute on large scale charts. Every chart states the projection and the datum to which its graticule refers.
