Definition
Collective term for the anchor, cable, swivel, shackles, snubber, chain stopper and windlass that together hold a vessel to the seabed. Sizing is driven by displacement and windage rather than length alone; a cruising yacht typically carries a bower anchor of about one kilogram per metre of hull length as a rough starting point, plus a second anchor of different type as a kedge or storm backup.
