Definition
Equal to 1852 metres per hour, about 0.514 metres per second or 1.15 statute miles per hour. The name comes from the common log, a line knotted at regular intervals streamed for a timed interval so that the count of knots gave speed directly. Note that a knot already contains the per hour, so knots per hour is meaningless except as an acceleration. Wind speeds in shipping forecasts and on charts are also given in knots.
