The fourth stage: fixing position at intervals matched to the proximity of danger and comparing it with the planned track by independent means, typically a satellite position cross-checked against visual bearings, transits, radar ranges or the echo sounder. Cross-track error, time to the next waypoint and depth are watched against limits set during planning. Monitoring also means testing whether the plan's assumptions, especially tidal height, stream and wind, still hold.
