Definition
When observations disagree, the navigator forms a judgement rather than mechanically averaging. A satellite position, an estimated position from dead reckoning, a single strong position line and a sounding are weighed according to their known reliability and age. The MPP is plotted as the working position from which the next course is laid off, and the reasoning is noted in the log. Where a danger lies close by, the MPP is biased deliberately toward the hazard so that the resulting decisions err safely.
