NMEA 0183 sends comma-separated sentences over a serial link, commonly at 4800 baud. GGA carries time, latitude, longitude, fix quality, satellites used, HDOP and antenna height, while RMC gives time, date, position, speed and course over ground, and magnetic variation. NMEA 2000 replaces this with a 250 kbit/s CAN bus carrying binary parameter groups, allowing multiple talkers and listeners on a single backbone with far greater throughput.
