Definition
A documented plan for the entire intended voyage, prepared before departure and built in four stages: appraisal, planning, execution and monitoring. It records courses and distances, waypoints, hazards, tidal windows, contingency ports, communications and reporting points. SOLAS chapter V requires voyage planning by every vessel, including pleasure craft in many states, and the plan should exist in a form that can be checked afterwards, whether a chart plot, a plan sheet or a spreadsheet.
