Definition
A PLB uses the same 406 MHz Cospas-Sarsat alerting as an EPIRB but is smaller, registered to an individual, manually activated and typically specified for a shorter minimum operating period, commonly twenty-four hours. It is not float-free and many models must be held clear of the water with the antenna upright, so a lifejacket pocket mounting is usual. It is a personal supplement to, not a replacement for, the vessel's EPIRB.
