Definition
A side ladder rigged, secured and tended under the ship's responsibility, with a responsible officer in attendance and direct communication with the bridge. The climb from the water should not exceed 9 metres; above that a combination arrangement with an accommodation ladder is used. Steps must be horizontal and equally spaced, typically 310 to 350 millimetres apart. A lifebuoy with self-igniting light, a heaving line and adequate lighting are required at the point of access.
