Definition
Characteristic of narrow channels, estuaries and constrictions where topography confines the flow to a single axis. The stream builds, peaks near mid-flow, decays to slack and then reverses through approximately 180 degrees. Because rate follows an approximately sinusoidal pattern, the Rule of Thirds gives useful hourly estimates: about one third of maximum in the first and last hours, two thirds in the second and fifth, and full rate in the middle two.
