Definition
Typical of open sea and wide shelf areas away from constraining coastlines, where Coriolis deflection causes the current vector to rotate, generally clockwise in the northern hemisphere, completing a full circuit each tidal cycle. There is no true slack water; instead the rate passes through a minimum on the minor axis. Tidal diamonds offshore therefore show the direction changing progressively hour by hour rather than reversing abruptly.
