Definition
By measuring the carrier phase difference between antennas on a fixed baseline, a satellite compass derives true heading directly, with no deviation, no variation correction and no settling error on turns. Accuracy of the order of one degree or better is typical, improving with a longer baseline. It also supplies rate of turn, pitch and roll for radar and AIS stabilisation, but it fails whenever satellite reception fails, so a magnetic standby remains essential.
