Definition
Calculated as veered cable divided by depth measured from the bow roller, so charted depth plus height of tide at high water plus freeboard. Common working guidance is a minimum of 4:1 for all chain and 6:1 to 8:1 for rope with a chain leader, increased in heavy weather. Example: 6 m charted, 3 m rise, 1.5 m freeboard gives 10.5 m, so veer about 42 m of chain.
