Definition
Hs is the raw reading off the instrument. Applying index error and dip gives Ha, the apparent altitude. Applying the main correction for refraction, semi-diameter and parallax gives Ho, the true or observed altitude used in sight reduction. The Nautical Almanac's inside front cover combines refraction, semi-diameter and parallax into a single altitude correction table for the sun, stars and planets, entered with Ha.
