Definition
The moment of stream reversal, which in a standing-wave regime occurs near high and low water but in a progressive-wave regime occurs near mid-tide. In narrow passages slack may last only a few minutes; in wide bays it may be a soft transition of half an hour or more. Slack is the preferred time for transiting tidal races, entering narrow locks and for diving or anchoring work.
