Definition
A length of nylon, typically 8 to 12 metres, attached to the chain by a hook or soft splice and made fast to a cleat or, as a bridle, to both bows of a catamaran. Chain is then slacked so the nylon carries the load. It absorbs snatch loads, protects the windlass gypsy, which is not designed to hold anchor loads, and greatly reduces noise transmitted through the hull.
