Definition
Measured by the ship's log and used as the input to dead reckoning, because the water itself is then displaced separately by tidal stream or current. It is the correct speed for judging sail trim and hull performance, and for the distance run used when constructing an estimated position. In slack water speed through the water and speed over ground agree, but with three knots of tide they can differ by six knots between fair and foul.
