Definition
A fore spring leads from a forward cleat aft to the pontoon and prevents the vessel moving astern; a back or after spring leads from aft forward and prevents her moving ahead. Together with head and stern lines they complete a standard four line moor. Springs are also used dynamically: motoring gently ahead against a fore spring, with the wheel over, springs the stern off the berth for departure.
