Definition
When Moon and Sun are in syzygy, their tide-generating effects reinforce, so the M2 and S2 constituents add and range reaches maximum. Because of the age of the tide, the largest range typically lags syzygy by roughly one to two days at most ports. Springs recur at intervals of about 14.8 days. The term derives from the sense of water springing forth, not from the season.
