The statute mile is 1609.344 m, or 5280 feet, against the international nautical mile of exactly 1852 m; one nautical mile therefore equals about 1.151 statute miles, so 10 kn is roughly 11.5 mph. Statute miles and miles per hour appear on United States Great Lakes and inland waterway charts, in some canal guides, and in shore-based weather bulletins, so units must be checked before any distance or speed is plotted.
