Stemming the Tide

Definition

Steering into the stream at a speed through the water equal to its rate, so that speed over the ground is nil and the vessel holds station relative to the land. Against a 3 kn ebb, 3 kn through the water gives zero SOG. It is used while waiting for a bridge, lock or berth to clear, and in a narrow channel it preserves steerage and rudder authority far better than lying stopped.
