Definition
A headland, sound, bar, bridge or lock that can only be passed safely during a limited part of the tidal cycle, because the stream would otherwise be foul or dangerously strong or the depth insufficient. Planning works backwards from the gate. If a tidal race runs fair from two hours before to three hours after local high water, and the gate lies 18 miles off at a planned 5 knots, departure falls nearly four hours earlier.
