Definition
Occurs where a strong stream is forced over an abrupt shoal, around a headland, or where two streams converge, generating steep standing waves, overfalls and violent turbulence. Conditions worsen dramatically when wind opposes stream. Charted with the symbol for overfalls and races and usually described in the relevant Sailing Directions, with a recommended inshore passage or a stated offing, commonly several miles, to clear the worst water.
