Breakwater Marina places visiting boats at the heart of Townsville’s waterfront, moments from The Strand and within easy reach of the city centre. Its 325 berths accommodate monohulls, multihulls and larger yachts up to approximately 45 metres, creating a lively home port for local owners, liveaboards, coastal cruisers and superyachts.
The marina’s scale is matched by a friendly boating community and an enviable cruising position. Magnetic Island is only a short passage away, while the Palm Island group, Orpheus Island and the Great Barrier Reef invite longer adventures north and east.
Berthing is available for short visits and longer agreements, with fresh water, secure gated access and modern shore-power connections throughout the marina. Larger-yacht berths offer substantial three-phase power, while bathrooms, laundry, Wi-Fi and social areas support comfortable life aboard. Liveaboard and pet-friendly arrangements add flexibility for owners making Townsville their seasonal base.
The dual-sided 24-hour fuel wharf dispenses diesel in multiple flow rates together with unleaded fuel, making refuelling efficient for everything from tenders to larger commercial and cruising vessels. Ice, gas refills and a nearby loading wharf simplify departures, while the marina office provides arrival assistance and monitors VHF channels 10 and 16. The adjoining Bluewater Bar and Grill completes the experience with an easy waterfront meal close to the boat.
The marina entrance provides straightforward access from Cleveland Bay, with Townsville’s port and ferry traffic adding energy to the surrounding waterways. Once secured, crews can walk to The Strand, restaurants, supermarkets and the city’s waterfront attractions without needing a car.
Magnetic Island’s bays are close enough for a spontaneous day sail, and the islands and reefs farther north create outstanding cruising itineraries during the dry season. Winter and spring bring settled weather, visiting yachts and racing events, giving the marina its most social atmosphere. Its combination of city convenience and immediate island access makes Breakwater Marina one of the most versatile boating bases in North Queensland.

American River (Kangaroo Island, SA) is a small, sheltered inlet and township on the north‑eastern side of Kangaroo Island that acts as a calm staging point for cruising the eastern part of the island and for short hops through Backstairs Passage. It’s distinctive for its protected anchorage inside Eastern Cove and the adjacency of Pelican Lagoon — a shallow, ecologically important lagoon with sanctuary zoning — which shapes how and where boats can move. The area suits sheltered day sailing, weekend cruising and short coastal passages; it’s appropriate for trailer sailors, small cruisers and a
Plan passages across Spencer Gulf or to Kangaroo Island by basing fuel on your boat’s actual consumption plus a generous reserve, choosing sensible staging/stop options that match your boat and crew, and prioritising shelter and weather windows (gale fronts, strong winds and tidal streams can make the gulf uncomfortable or unsafe). Confirm fuel availability, safe anchorages or marinas on your route, and check up-to-date local weather, tide and navigation information before you go.
Explore →Plan as a chain of conservative daily legs tied to your boat’s real-world fuel and speed in the expected sea state, with confirmed primary and alternate anchorages/berths, fuel legs and back-up fuel options, and a documented emergency/diversion plan (comms, tow and med-evac). Build tidal and weather gates into each leg and carry chart and comms redundancy.
Explore →A good float plan and a well-stocked emergency kit significantly improve your chances of a safe outcome when cruising remote parts of South Australia’s coastline. The float plan should give someone ashore all the information they need to find you and raise help if you don’t return; the emergency kit should allow you to stabilise the boat, care for injuries, signal for rescue and survive until help arrives.
Explore →Tidal streams and local wind patterns can change trip time, fuel use, helm balance and safety margins on short coastal runs — plan your departure and route to use favourable tidal flow, allow margin for wind-driven sea and gusts, and check up-to-date local tide and weather information before you go.
