Clayton Bay Boat Club

Every other club in this South Australian collection races on salt water. Clayton Bay Boat Club does its sailing on the fresh water of the Lower Murray, about an hour's drive from Adelaide, and that single fact shapes everything about it — the fleet, the calendar and the culture.

The club began life in 1974 on the riverbank at Clayton Bay, between Milang and Goolwa, with Lake Alexandrina opening out nearby. Its stated mission is to encourage recreational boating in every form across the Murray Lakes and the Lower Murray River, welcoming all ages, experience levels and skills, and it styles itself — with a wink — among the best-kept secrets in the state. The club pays respect to the Ngarrindjeri people, naming them the traditional custodians of the country and waters where it meets.

The fleet tells the story of the place: trailer yachts are the mainstay, with dinghies and catamarans appearing in smaller numbers, all of them chasing club trophies through a mixed-fleet program and usually finishing the day around a club barbecue. The annual Rat Race Regatta, sailed near Rat Island with divisions for juniors, dinghies, trailer sailers and multihulls, is the signature event, while the Red Top Series runs on the first weekend of each month from October through May. Commodore Darren Stanbridge heads the committee, with Craig Birbeck as Vice Commodore, Brian O'Flaherty as Treasurer and Ric Kies as Secretary; together they look after a ramp, short-stay marina berths, hard stands, licensed clubrooms with bar and kitchen, showers and an outdoor entertaining area — everything a river-sailing club needs on one bankside site.

Let us be plain about one thing up front: Clayton Bay Boat Club publishes no formal learn-to-sail courses, and no accredited training program appears anywhere in its materials. What the club offers instead is the older, informal model — learning by sailing — and its own description of catering to every age and every stage of boating experience suggests that is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight.

In practice, the club's racing culture does the teaching. The Red Top Series, run on the first weekend of each month from October to May, gives newcomers a regular, low-pressure rhythm of racing in which to crew, steer and learn; the Rat Race Regatta carries a dedicated junior division; and the mixed fleet — catamarans, dinghies and trailer sailers starting together — means a beginner can watch every kind of boat-handling in a single afternoon. Trailer-sailer sailing is itself a thorough education: rigging and launching from the club's ramp and hard stands, reefing for river squalls, reading shallow water and anchoring overnight all come with the territory.

The club's cruise program extends the classroom well beyond the start line. Organised cruises head to Finniss, Currency Creek, Narrung and Milang, and into the Coorong — real passages that build navigation and seamanship skills no weekend race can teach. It is worth noting, as general context, that many small regional clubs across Australia work exactly this way: without accredited centres they rely on experienced members passing skills down informally, and sailors seeking formal certification typically travel to larger centres. Clayton Bay fits that pattern — and the enduring enthusiasm of its fleet suggests the pattern works.

Clayton Bay occupies a riverbank site on the Lower Murray, roughly midway between Milang and Goolwa, and the boating geography within reach of the clubhouse is remarkable. As the report of the club's 2021 Flying Fifteen regatta put it, Lake Alexandrina is effectively on the doorstep and the Coorong within sight — three distinct boating environments reachable without ever pulling a mast down.

Freshwater sailing has its own texture: no tides to plan around, sandy shallows to read, and long reaches of open lake water once you clear the river mouth. Club racing happens on the waters around Clayton Bay and Rat Island, and the river here carries a sailing tradition of its own that long predates the clubhouse: the fleet of the celebrated Milang to Goolwa Freshwater Classic sails straight past Clayton Bay each year. When members want to go further, organised cruises run to Finniss, Currency Creek, Narrung and Milang, and push on into the Coorong itself.

Onshore, the club is well equipped: hard stands, a launching ramp and short-stay marina berths handle the trailer-sailer fleet, while licensed clubrooms with a bar and kitchen, showers, toilets and an outdoor barbecue area handle the sailors. The club belongs to the Alexandrina Council area, in the state seat of Finniss and federally Mayo, with mail collected at PO Box 397, Milang. Adelaide is about an hour away by road — close enough for visiting sailors to tow down for a weekend, far enough for the river to feel like another world entirely.

The club began life in 1974, and for its first four and a half decades it sailed along quietly as a trailer-yacht club on the Lower Murray. Then, a season or two before 2021, something changed: Flying Fifteens began turning up to race with the club's mixed fleet, and in doing so — as later reporting put it — revived the class in South Australia.

The revival announced itself in January 2021. With COVID having disrupted the Flying Fifteen nationals, a Facebook group organised local boats for a substitute regatta at Clayton Bay, held over the first four days of the month. Nine Flying Fifteens fronted, including one — 'Bubbles' — that made the trip all the way from Tin Can Bay in Queensland. The invitation race drew eighteen boats in total — among them seven Farr 6 trailer yachts, one Sabre dinghy and a wooden Fulmar 15 built locally by hand — racing a course of roughly fourteen kilometres around Rat Island.

The Flying Fifteen connection has endured. Clayton Bay is now one of three South Australian clubs with a fleet, with Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club and Christies Sailing Club the other two, and Vice Commodore Craig Birbeck the local fleet contact. The club's broader program has kept its shape through it all — the Red Top Series through the warmer months, the Rat Race Regatta as the annual showpiece, and trophy racing followed by the traditional club barbecue. Membership remains modestly priced by city standards: the 2023 schedule listed a $116 joining fee, ordinary membership at $243 a year, associate and social memberships at $68, and hard stand space at $370 a year.
