Supplies & chandlery
Find practical advice on what chandlers do, when to use one and how to choose the right supplies for your yacht or dinghy. Compare 63 reviewed businesses, local coverage and customer feedback.
A chandlery is the go-to shop for everyday sailing supplies, spare parts and small-fit equipment you need to keep a boat safe and seaworthy. In Australia, chandlers range from local harbour-side stores that stock common items to specialised suppliers who can order or source hard-to-find marine components. They sell consumables, rigging hardware, safety gear, paints and maintenance products, and often act as the bridge between boatowners and trade services such as riggers, sailmakers and marine electricians.
Most sailors first visit a chandlery for provisioning and routine maintenance: buying rope, shackles, blocks, anodes, fuel and oil treatment, anti-foul paint, deck cleaners and basic safety equipment. Chandlers also help with replacements when something fails — a broken snap shackle, a corroded cleat, a failed bilge pump — and can usually advise on suitable materials for Australian conditions, where strong sun, salt and seasonal storms accelerate wear.
A good chandlery will do more than just sell parts. Expect knowledgeable staff who can identify the right size or specification from a photo or measurement, supply product data sheets on request, place special orders and arrange freight to remote locations. They may offer small services such as cutting rope to length, fitting terminals, shortening life lines or supplying small repair kits, but larger installations and certification work are typically referred to trades.
Before you book a job or order a specialised part, it helps to know what you have: bring photographs, part numbers, measurements and an honest account of how the part failed. That saves time and reduces the chance of buying the wrong item. Lead times and availability vary widely in Australia, especially for specialised or imported items, so expect to plan ahead for major refits or race‑specific purchases.

A good chandlery relationship saves time and frustration. Approach the visit prepared, communicate what you know about the failing part, and expect practical advice about materials and lead times. For larger or safety‑critical installations, use the chandlery to source parts and then book a qualified trade for the fitting and testing.
