Definition
A paperless ship must carry an accepted fallback that allows navigation to be taken over without delay and the voyage to be completed safely. In practice this means either a second independent type-approved ECDIS with its own power supply and independent position input, or a full folio of corrected paper charts. The arrangement must also cover route planning, chart updating and record keeping, and the changeover procedure should be practised, not merely documented.
