Definition
ECDIS is a navigation system that displays official vector chart data with own-ship position from GNSS, combined with heading, log, radar and AIS inputs, and provides route planning, route checking and grounding alarms. Only a type-approved installation running official data, with an accepted backup arrangement, satisfies SOLAS chapter V chart carriage requirements. Carriage became mandatory for most cargo and passenger ships through a phased schedule completed in the mid-2010s.
