Definition
ECS covers any electronic charting equipment that is not type approved as ECDIS, including yacht plotters, tablet applications and many pilot systems. It may display official or privately produced vector or raster data, and can be extremely capable, but it does not meet SOLAS chart carriage requirements and its alarms and data quality are not governed by the performance standard. Aboard a yacht it is best treated as an aid alongside paper charts.
