Definition
An ENC is an official database issued by or on the authority of a government hydrographic office, in which every feature is an object carrying attributes such as depth, colour, period or name. Data is supplied in cells with a fixed naming convention whose third character indicates the usage band, from overview through to berthing. Because it is a database, the ECDIS can interrogate it, generate alarms from it and redraw it at any scale.
