Definition
A polar plots predicted or measured boat speed against true wind angle for a series of true wind speeds, usually from six to thirty knots. It is generated by a velocity prediction program or built from logged data, and identifies optimum upwind and downwind angles for best velocity made good. Routeing software needs an accurate polar; an optimistic one produces routes the vessel cannot actually keep up with.
