Definition
A vessel using a scheme must proceed in the appropriate lane in the general direction of traffic flow, keep clear of the separation line or zone, and normally join or leave at the termination. A vessel crossing must do so on a heading as nearly as practicable at right angles to the general direction of flow, which means heading, not course made good, so tidal set is not compensated. Vessels under 20 metres and sailing vessels must not impede power-driven vessels following a lane.
