Definition
When two sailing vessels approach so as to involve risk of collision, the one with the wind on the port side keeps out of the way of the one with the wind on the starboard side. When both have the wind on the same side, the vessel to windward keeps out of the way of the vessel to leeward. If a port-tack vessel cannot determine whether the other is on port or starboard, she must keep out of the way.
