Definition
When two power-driven vessels meet on reciprocal or nearly reciprocal courses so as to involve risk of collision, each must alter course to starboard so they pass port to port. The situation exists when a vessel sees the other ahead or nearly ahead, at night seeing both sidelights and the masthead lights in line or nearly in line. If there is any doubt whether the situation exists, the vessel must assume it does and act accordingly.
