Definition
Safety depth governs the presentation of individual spot soundings: those equal to or shallower than the set value are shown emphasised in black, while deeper soundings are drawn in a lighter grey. Unlike the safety contour it generates no alarm and moves no contour line. Setting it to the same value as the intended safety contour keeps the picture consistent; the power-up default is commonly 30 m and must be reviewed for the vessel's draught.
