About
Zurich-backed boat insurance with agreed value on new dealer boats for 2 years, racing cover, a cyclone excess waived for boats on their own trailer, and a specialist claims team. Brisbane office at Woolloongabba.
Nautilus is the boat insurer many Australians meet at the dealership. It's backed by Zurich, one of the world's biggest insurers, and since 2005 it has grown to more than 75,000 customers and paid out over $450 million in claims. It writes separate policies for everyday boats, premium pleasure craft and jet skis, so each type gets cover designed for it.

View profileNautilus Marine Insurance Agency opened in April 2005, focused purely on recreational boats. It began working with boat manufacturers in 2008 and crossed to New Zealand in 2010. In 2013 the business was renamed NM Insurance, and in 2014 Steadfast Group took a majority stake. It launched sister brand Proteus Marine Insurance for commercial marine in 2015, and opened its Victorian and Western Australian offices in October 2024. Nautilus celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025.
Nautilus is strongest for new boats and jet skis, and for Queensland owners worried about cyclones. If choosing your own repairer matters, Club Marine and New Wave both allow it. For ocean passages beyond 250 nm, talk to Pantaenius or Topsail.
Nautilus also issues layup and currency certificates on request.

Queensland owners should look closely at cyclone cover. Nautilus waives its named-cyclone excess if your boat is on its own trailer, a real plus in the north. See our guides to marine insurance in Brisbane and Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast, or compare other marine insurance providers. Nautilus also has offices in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

“Tried to figure out if I could get insurance for a boat I was planning to buy. Simply refused to answer the question. Statement, buy first and then hope we will insure. Absolutely useless”
“Nautilus will not act fairly unless you are willing to fight them. You should not have to fight the people you pay to look after your interests.I wouldn’t recommend insuring with them. The owner of a boat stored next to mine made a claim to repair his boat from damage during a storm. When I became aware of his intention to claim I notified my insurer. As it turns out both of us were insured with Nautilus. The problems began when the same person - Brett- was allocated to both the other owner and me. Brett made it clear that he had made a final decision finding me at fault. I pointed out that I had not admitted fault; that he had made no enquiry of me as to the circumstances of the incident; that I was concerned that his clear conflict of interest led me to fear that my interests were being dismissed. It took several weeks of correspondence for Nautilus to assign another agent who did then at least go through the motions of asking me for information. I’m still not sure what the upshot will be, although Nautilus has offered to reimburse my excess. There has been no admission of error or fault or even acknowledgment that assigning the same agent to both sides of a claim is poor business and lousy ethics.”
“I had insurance for my JetSki with NM Insurance for the past 5 year. As expected It takes 30 seconds for them to take money FROM YOU when you pay for your insurance. I recently sold my Jetski to my friend. So I cancelled my insurance after selling it. The company cancelled the insurance but delaying the refund of the insurance money. After waiting for 25 minutes on telephone they advised that they would take 10 days to refund the money!! They said they don’t do it on one to one basis; rather in a group of refund applications!! It was just refund of insurance fee. Imagine if you had an accident or damage to your boat or JetSki how much they would muck around for help or payments!! So, they will take “Your Money in 30 Seconds” for your Insurance; But if you happen to need their help; Keep ready to find lame excuses. Incredibly incompetent Insurance company.”
“Tried to call for an inquiry about the new policy. Was on the phone for 25 minutes to finally get through to nobody and told to leave name and number to call back. Didn't even call back the same day so I cancelled the new policy and went to a company that actually answers customer calls.”
“Prices need to be a little more competitive”
Ballina sits at the mouth of the Richmond River on NSW’s far‑north coast. It’s a working river entrance with a compact boat harbour, exposed ocean beaches and a changeable, sand‑dominated bar. For coastal cruisers it offers a useful stop between Tweed Heads and Yamba, sheltered estuary cruising upriver and easy access to open ocean passages — but the river entrance is highly condition‑dependent and demands respectful planning and local knowledge.
Maybe — it depends. In NSW you often need registration and a boat operator licence for motorised vessels, but many small trailerable sailing dinghies without engines don’t require boat registration or a licence. Check the specific rules for your craft, trailer and engine.
