Brisbane is one of Australia’s most practical sailing-service cities because it gives sailors two different marine worlds in the same region. The Brisbane River has serious shipyard, refit, commercial and superyacht infrastructure. Moreton Bay has the sailing clubs, marinas, boatyards, moorings, cruising routes, riggers, sailmakers and day-to-day yacht services that local sailors use constantly.
That split matters. A yacht needing major refit, shipwright work, hardstand, project management, high-capacity lifting, paint, engineering or electrical integration may belong at Rivergate, Hemmant or another Brisbane River service yard. A yacht needing rigging, sails, club support, antifoul, marina access, cruising preparation, local mechanics, chandlery, electronics, training or Moreton Bay knowledge may be better started at Manly, Wynnum, Scarborough, Redcliffe, Cleveland or Redland Bay.
Brisbane sailors also operate in a more complicated cruising environment than the city map suggests. Moreton Bay is not a flat playground. It has shallow banks, channels, island anchorages, marine-park zones, go-slow areas, public moorings, exposed stretches, strong afternoon trade-wind patterns, summer storms, northerly and southeasterly wind issues, shipping movements, sand bars, mangrove creeks and long distances between service points. A yacht that is fine for a Manly twilight race may not be ready for North Moreton, the southern bay islands, the Brisbane to Gladstone route, the Sandy Strait, the Gold Coast Seaway, a coastal hop to Mooloolaba or a passage north.
Use the YouSail Marine Directory as the main service-discovery hub, and use the YouSail Sailing Map when the boat’s location matters more than the name of the business. The YouSail directory and map are built around practical sailing categories such as marinas, haul-out, boatbuilding and repairs, sailing clubs, marine services, riggers, diesel support and local sailing resources. Brisbane as a marine-service region
Brisbane’s marine-services network is best understood in five zones.
The Brisbane River, especially Murarrie, Hemmant, Lytton and the TradeCoast area, is the heavy-service corridor. Rivergate Marina & Shipyard is based on the Brisbane River near the city and airport, with a shipyard that lists a paved hardstand, a 75-tonne travel lift and marine electricians. Rivergate visitor information also describes it as an official Customs and Quarantine clearance port for Brisbane and notes absentee boat-care checks for vessels left in the marina.
The Yard Brisbane in Hemmant is even more industrial in scale. It advertises a 600-tonne marine travel lift with a 13-metre beam, able to haul vessels up to 80 metres, supported by 300-tonne and 65-tonne marine straddle carriers. It also lists more than 30,000 square metres of hardstand, laydown and assembly area.
Manly Boat Harbour is the sailing-service heart of Brisbane. This is where Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, East Coast Marina, Wynnum Manly Yacht Club, Darling Point Sailing Squadron, Moreton Bay Trailer Boat Club, rigging, marine electrical, sail service, yacht brokers, training, chandlery, fuel and general yacht maintenance naturally overlap. RQYS is located at 578 Royal Esplanade, Manly, and Visit Brisbane describes it as being on the doorstep of Moreton Bay, around 16 kilometres east of the CBD.
Scarborough and Redcliffe serve north Moreton Bay. Scarborough Marina is a full-service marina on the Redcliffe Peninsula with a 35-tonne travel lift, hardstand, drystack, fuel services and onsite marine providers. It is a logical base for sailors cruising northern Moreton Bay, Deception Bay, Bribie, the Pumicestone Passage, Tangalooma, Moreton Island and boats whose owners live north of Brisbane.
The Redlands, Cleveland, Redland Bay and Eprapah Creek serve the southern bay. Redland City Marina advertises a 30-tonne Sea Lift, slipway access for vessels up to 30 tonnes and 65 feet, and secure hardstand storage for servicing, repairs or upgrades. Redlands Coast Marina positions itself between the Coomera and Brisbane River marine hubs, with access to Moreton Bay, hardstand storage, berthing, travel lift and slipway access.
The core YouSail links for Brisbane sailors
The Brisbane guide should use YouSail links naturally throughout the page.
Find marine services in the YouSail Directory
Search Brisbane and Moreton Bay on the YouSail Map
Find haul-out and slipway services
Find boatbuilding and repair services
The YouSail Marina Service category is especially useful for Brisbane because marina choice often decides contractor access, berth availability, pump-out, hardstand proximity, fuel, storage, insurance compliance and whether the boat can be worked on at all. The YouSail Haul-out / Slipway category is the next key link because Brisbane sailors regularly need lift-out for antifoul, anodes, seacocks, rudders, saildrives, propellers, survey, bottom work and cyclone or storm-season planning.
Brisbane River services: Rivergate, Hemmant and the TradeCoast
The Brisbane River is where the city’s most serious marine infrastructure sits. This is not where every yacht needs to go for ordinary work, but it is where a sailor should look when the job becomes bigger than a marina berth or small slip.
Rivergate Marina & Shipyard is one of Australia’s best-known refit and service hubs. It is positioned on the Brisbane River near the city and airport, and the shipyard lists a 75-tonne travel lift, hardstand and access to marine electricians. Independent marine-industry listings describe the Rivergate precinct as having 75-tonne and 300-tonne travel lifts, fuel wharf, marina, suppliers and maritime contractors.
Rivergate is particularly relevant for cruising yachts arriving from the Pacific, superyachts, vessels needing customs clearance, boats requiring project-managed refit, and yachts with several trades working in sequence. It is also useful for absentee owners because Rivergate’s visitor site says its marina can provide absentee boat-care checks of bilge and battery levels for boats left in the marina for an extended period.
The surrounding TradeCoast and Murarrie area adds engineering, shipwrights, electrical, fabrication and specialist repair depth. Gateway Marine Shipwrights says it has a permanent Brisbane location at Rivergate Marina & Shipyard and offers customers access to marina berths, deep-water access, travel lifts up to 300 tonnes, hardstand and enclosed refit sheds. Lex Baddiley Marine Engineering is based in Murarrie and says its workshop is positioned within Rivergate Marina & Shipyard, giving clients access to high-capacity travel lifts, hardstand and modern maintenance infrastructure.
The Yard Brisbane at Hemmant is the other big piece of the heavy-service picture. It is relevant when the job needs very large lifting capacity, hardstand, shed projects, antifoul, sandblasting, Propspeed, electrical, trimming, osmosis work, survey, berthing, refit, DIY works, marine flooring, shipwright services or running gear services.
For sailors, the Brisbane River should be considered when the job involves serious refit, hull structure, large-scale painting, sandblasting, major electrical work, re-powering, commercial-grade hardstand, high-capacity lift, project management, insurance repair or a boat that is simply too large or complex for smaller bay yards.
Manly Boat Harbour: Brisbane’s sailing-service core
Manly is the most important sailing-service precinct in Brisbane. It is where yacht clubs, marinas, riggers, sailmakers, marine electricians, mechanics, training providers, brokers, chandlery, hardstand, fuel, dry storage and Moreton Bay knowledge all come together.
Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is the most important sailing institution in this area. It describes itself as being located on the waterfront in Manly and home to one of Queensland’s oldest and most prestigious sailing and cruising clubs. Its club content says sailors from beginners in Optimists and Sabots through to elite sailors compete and sail from RQYS, and the Squadron hosts club championship racing plus state, national and international regattas.
RQYS is not only a club. Its Manly location page says its slipping facilities include a travel lift, slewing crane and service area with frames, plus a Marine Trade Centre dedicated to marine engineering and boat repairs. Its boatyard page says the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron boatyard provides services to members and visitors and lists a 35-tonne Marine Travelift.
East Coast Marina adds another major Manly service point. d’Albora describes East Coast Marina as being in the heart of Manly Boat Harbour, with 295 secure water berths, undercover dry stacker storage for 240 vessels and a boatyard equipped with a 35-tonne travel lift.
Wynnum Manly Yacht Club is also central to the Manly sailing-service network. The club describes itself as a welcoming hub for boat owners, sailors and the wider bayside community, supporting cruising, racing, dragon boating and social connection on Moreton Bay. Its trade directory says WMYC maintains a trusted network of approved contractors and that boat owners needing slipway services can work out of the Wynnum Manly Yacht Club Marina.
Darling Point Sailing Squadron gives Manly its off-the-beach and skiff culture. It is located at the northern end of Manly Boat Harbour on Norfolk Point and caters for off-the-beach dinghies and skiffs with easy access to Waterloo Bay.
For a Brisbane sailor, Manly is usually the first place to look for rigging, sail service, yacht-club advice, marina berths, hardstand, antifoul, electronics, training, local contractors, Moreton Bay cruising knowledge and ordinary annual maintenance. It is the best all-round sailing-service base in Brisbane.
Scarborough, Redcliffe and north Moreton Bay
Scarborough and Redcliffe serve sailors on the north side of Brisbane and northern Moreton Bay. This area makes sense for boats sailing around Deception Bay, Bribie Island, Moreton Island, Tangalooma, the northern bay, the Pumicestone Passage and owners based north of the river.
Scarborough Marina describes itself as a full-service marina on the Redcliffe Peninsula, around 40 minutes north of Brisbane CBD, with a modern marina, full-service boatyard, dry stack, fuel services and onsite marine providers. Its boatyard page lists a 35-tonne travel lift, 10-tonne marine forklift, hardstand forklift, water blasting, screened work pens, tow boat service, lift-and-hold service, CCTV and onsite services including antifoul, fibreglass repairs, mechanical and electrical.
For visiting cruisers, Scarborough Marina also advertises a 35-tonne Marine Travelift, hardstand and haul-out, onsite chandlery and lift-and-hold inspection service for a quick hull clean and inspection.
Scarborough is especially useful when the boat is north of Brisbane, when the owner wants to avoid bringing the boat all the way into Manly or the river, or when the itinerary is focused on northern Moreton Bay rather than the southern bay islands. It is also a useful service stop for boats moving between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
Redlands, Cleveland, Redland Bay and the southern bay
The southern bay service region is important because many Brisbane sailors cruise or keep boats around Cleveland, Raby Bay, Peel Island, North Stradbroke Island, Russell Island, Macleay Island, Lamb Island, Karragarra, Redland Bay and the southern end of Moreton Bay. For these owners, Manly is not always the most practical solution.
Redland City Marina is a major southern bay maintenance option. It advertises a 30-tonne Sea Lift designed for wide-beam multihulls and monohulls, a slipway for vessels up to 30 tonnes and 65 feet, and secure hardstand storage for routine servicing, repairs or upgrades. Its facilities page adds forklift support, custom marine submersible trailers and transport from trucks to hardstand.
Redlands Coast Marina positions itself on Eprapah Creek with direct access to Moreton Bay, the islands and South East Queensland waterways. It promotes secure hardstand storage, maintenance services, berthing, travel lift and slipway access.
The Redlands make sense for southern Moreton Bay boats, multihulls, hardstand storage, routine servicing, bottom jobs, upgrade periods and owners who want to avoid moving the boat north to Manly or west to the Brisbane River. The area is also strategically positioned between Brisbane and the Gold Coast marine hubs, so it can work as a middle ground for some projects.
Marinas and berthing around Brisbane
A marina in Brisbane is not just a berth. It is the platform that determines what work can happen. The right marina gives access to shore power, water, pump-out, fuel, mechanics, electricians, sailmakers, riggers, surveyors, hardstand, security, parking, deliveries, club knowledge and local weather advice. The wrong marina can make every job harder.
Brisbane sailors usually choose between four broad berth environments.
The Brisbane River suits large-vessel work, city access, refit, customs clearance, superyacht-style logistics and TradeCoast services. Rivergate is the obvious example.
Manly Boat Harbour suits sailing-club life, Moreton Bay racing, cruising, rigging, sail service, yacht training, hardstand, dry storage, chandlery, haul-out and everyday yacht maintenance. RQYS, East Coast Marina and WMYC make this the densest Brisbane sailing-service precinct.
Scarborough suits north Moreton Bay access, full-service boatyard work, hardstand, drystack, chandlery and cruising boats heading toward Bribie, Moreton Island and the Sunshine Coast.
Redland Bay and the southern bay suit Cleveland, Raby Bay, Peel Island, Stradbroke, the southern Moreton Bay islands, hardstand, wide-beam handling and southern cruising logistics.
Use YouSail Marina Service when comparing marina-style services. A sailor should check not only berth price, but also draft, beam, insurance rules, contractor access, pump-out, fuel, hardstand, power, water, liveaboard restrictions, security, storm exposure, parking, marina office support and whether the marina is close to the actual services the boat needs.
Haul-out, hardstand and slipway services
Haul-out is one of the biggest service decisions in Brisbane because the region offers very different lift environments.
A 35-foot cruising yacht needing an annual antifoul may be well matched to Manly, Scarborough, Redland City Marina or a yacht-club slipway. A multihull may need to check beam, cradle and lift style. A larger yacht, commercial vessel or major refit project may belong at Rivergate or The Yard Brisbane. A boat that only needs a lift-and-hold inspection should not be booked into a long hardstand period unless there is a reason.
RQYS lists a 35-tonne Marine Travelift at its Manly boatyard. East Coast Marina lists a boatyard with a 35-tonne travel lift. Scarborough Marina lists a 35-tonne travel lift and boatyard with antifoul, fibreglass, mechanical and electrical providers. Redland City Marina lists a 30-tonne Sea Lift and slipway for vessels up to 30 tonnes and 65 feet. Rivergate lists 75-tonne lift capability in its shipyard information, while industry sources describe the precinct with 75-tonne and 300-tonne travel lifts. The Yard Brisbane lists a 600-tonne travel lift, 300-tonne and 65-tonne straddle carriers, and major hardstand capacity.
Use YouSail Haul-out / Slipway when the boat needs antifoul, anodes, seacocks, survey, saildrive work, shaft work, propeller service, rudder inspection, keel inspection, underwater damage repair, hull polishing, osmosis work or storm-season hardstand.
Antifouling in Brisbane and Moreton Bay
Antifouling around Brisbane is a serious maintenance item because warm water and long marina stays can foul yachts quickly. A boat that sits in Manly Harbour, the Brisbane River, Scarborough, Raby Bay or Redland Bay may lose speed, engine efficiency and sailing performance well before the owner notices from the deck.
A good Brisbane antifoul should not be treated as just paint. When the boat is out, check the hull, keel, rudder, anodes, propeller, shaft, saildrive, cutlass bearing, seacocks, through-hulls, transducers, grounding marks and old antifoul condition. If the boat is heading north, south, offshore or into a race program, the lift should become a full underwater inspection.
The right antifoul location depends on the boat’s home area. Manly works for most bayside yachts. Scarborough makes sense for northern bay boats. Redland City Marina or Redlands Coast Marina can suit southern bay boats. Rivergate and The Yard Brisbane suit larger or more complex refits.
Moreton Bay also adds an environmental layer. Queensland’s Moreton Bay Marine Park guidance says visitors must follow go-slow and no-anchoring-area rules, and the marine park has anchoring time limits, including permit requirements for anchoring more than 14 consecutive days in one area or more than 30 days in a 60-day period in one area. Queensland Government guidance also says marine pests can be transported by vessel fouling and that in-water cleaning should only be undertaken where out-of-water cleaning is not operationally practical and where risk is acceptable under relevant guidance.
For sailors, that means hull maintenance is not only about speed. It is also about compliance, biosecurity, seagrass, reefs, public moorings, sensitive habitats and responsible use of Moreton Bay.
Shipwrights, fibreglass and structural repair
A sailing yacht carries loads through structure. The rig loads chainplates. The mast loads the compression post and step. The keel loads the hull grid. The rudder loads bearings, quadrant and stock. The traveller, winches, stanchions, genoa tracks and bow roller all load deck structure. A minor crack in the wrong place is not just cosmetic.
Brisbane has strong shipwright capacity in the Rivergate and bay precincts. Gateway Marine Shipwrights says it offers a mobile service and has a permanent Brisbane location at Rivergate Marina & Shipyard, with access to travel lifts up to 300 tonnes, hardstand and enclosed refit sheds. Rivergate industry listings describe a large contractor network across trades, including composite repairs, timber and cabinetmaking, painters, electricians, diesel engines, power systems and marine fabric services.
On the bay side, marina boatyards at Manly, Scarborough and Redlands provide the practical access many yachts need for smaller and medium structural jobs. Scarborough Marina lists fibreglass repairs among onsite tenant services. Redland City Marina’s site describes maintenance, storage and service facilities, including hardstand storage, undercover maintenance bays and a paint shed.
Use YouSail Boatbuilding & Repairs when the work involves fibreglass, timber, gelcoat, osmosis, deck leaks, wet core, rudder repair, keel repair, collision damage, hatch replacement, chainplate leaks, deck hardware reinforcement, bow roller support, traveller pads or insurance repairs.
The most important Brisbane-specific advice is to respect tropical and subtropical moisture. Deck leaks, mould, hidden rot, wet core, corrosion behind furniture and old bedding compound all accelerate in warm, humid conditions. If a leak is near chainplates, stanchions, mast step, deck hardware or bulkheads, involve a shipwright before it becomes structural.
Rigging, rope and deck hardware
Brisbane has a strong sailing-rigging base around Manly and Moreton Bay. Rope Solutions Rigging says it operates from a fitted-out workshop and rigging shed on Brisbane’s Bayside in Manly, servicing Brisbane, the greater Moreton Bay region, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. It provides professional yacht rigging for performance racers, cruising yachts and dinghies. Its rigging pages refer to expert re-rigs, custom ropework, mast servicing, swaging, running rigging and rig modifications.
Rigging is one of the most important service categories for Brisbane sailors because Moreton Bay sailing can look benign until it is not. Afternoon southeasterlies, bay chop, race loads, coastal passages, Brisbane to Gladstone preparation, North Moreton crossings, offshore exits and older cruising yachts all expose weak rigging quickly.
A rigger should be involved when standing rigging age is unknown, terminals show rust, wire strands break, turnbuckles seize, chainplates leak, the furler binds, mast wiring fails, spreaders look damaged, lifelines are old, halyards chafe, reefing lines run badly or the boat is being prepared for offshore sailing.
For a yacht being bought in Brisbane, rigging history matters. A clean interior and recent engine service do not make an old rig safe. If the boat has been moored in humid salt air for years, hidden corrosion, deck leaks and chainplate issues deserve serious inspection.
Sailmakers and sail repairs
Brisbane sail service is shaped by Moreton Bay racing, cruising, multihulls, dinghies, Etchells, keelboats, trailer sailers, coastal cruisers and offshore programs. A sailor choosing sails in Brisbane must think about actual use: Moreton Bay twilights, weekend cruising, reefing in afternoon wind, racing, multihull performance, coastal work, Queensland sun and UV exposure.
North Sails lists a Brisbane sail loft, and its Brisbane announcement says the local loft began as Bradford Prentice in 1993, became a local North Sails agent in 2001, and later joined the North Sails group as a fully serviced Brisbane loft. LR Sails is based in Deception Bay and says it services Scarborough, Newport, Redcliffe, Rivergate, Manly, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Raby Bay, Mooloolaba, Noosa, Tin Can Bay and Hervey Bay, covering yacht, multihull, off-the-beach dinghy and catamaran sails. OneSails Brisbane says its loft can produce sails from one-design to maxi-yachts and support sails of any size.
For Brisbane sailors, sail repair timing is critical. UV strips, leech stitching, batten pockets, luff tape, reef patches, slides, headboard webbing, clew rings and old repairs should be checked before summer and before any coastal passage. Queensland sun attacks stitching and covers. A headsail can look acceptable on a furler until the first proper breeze opens the weak seam.
Sailmakers are not only for new sails. They are service providers for performance, safety and resale. If a boat is being bought in Manly, Scarborough, Redland Bay or Rivergate, the sail inventory should be assessed as part of the purchase, especially if offshore use is planned.
Marine diesel, engines, saildrives and mechanical work
Brisbane has strong marine mechanical depth because it supports sailing yachts, powerboats, reef cruisers, commercial vessels, superyachts, trailer boats, river vessels and Moreton Bay fleets.
At the heavy-service end, Rivergate and its precinct support engineering, diesel, generators, power systems and contractor networks. Commercial listings describe Rivergate’s shipyard services as including diesel marine engines, generators, power-control systems, electrical engineers and more than 20 trades. Lex Baddiley Marine Engineering in Murarrie says it supports vessel owners throughout Rivergate and Brisbane with marine engineering and vessel repair services.
At the bay-service end, Brisbane Mobile Marine says it offers complete pre-service inspections from tinnies to yachts, sail boats, power boats and trailer boats. AW Marine is located in Manly and describes itself as a Brisbane marine vessel maintenance and repair business servicing the Marina Precinct and Brisbane southside.
The key for sailors is knowing when a mechanic can work afloat and when the boat must be lifted. Oil, filters, fuel bleeding, belts, impellers, coolant checks, alternator output, starter faults and many diagnosis jobs can happen at the berth. Saildrive seals, propeller work, bent shafts, cutlass bearings, shaft alignment, underwater exhaust, saildrive corrosion and rudder-related vibration normally need haul-out.
For Moreton Bay sailors, the engine should be serviced before it becomes a rescue problem. A blocked fuel filter or failed raw-water impeller near the Manly entrance is one problem. The same fault in northern Moreton Bay, around Peel Island, near the shipping channels or offshore from Cape Moreton is a different kind of day.
Marine electrical, electronics and cruising power
Brisbane is a strong place to solve electrical problems before heading north, south or offshore. A modern sailing yacht depends on batteries, alternator charging, solar, shore power, DC distribution, bilge pumps, refrigeration, autopilot, instruments, windlass, AIS, VHF, GPS, chartplotters, radar, Starlink or cellular routers and navigation lights.
Ocean Logic says it is located at Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in Manly and offers mobile service from the Sunshine Coast to northern NSW, covering marine electronics and power solutions. Electech Industries is based around RQYS and services Brisbane’s Bayside, including Wynnum, Manly, Lota, Birkdale, Cleveland, Wellington Point and Thornlands. It says it specialises in marine electrical work, including service, repairs and refurbishments.
Hang Loose Electrical is based in Redcliffe and specialises in marine electrical services across Moreton Bay and the greater Brisbane region. Aus Marine Services says it provides marine IT and networking support across Brisbane, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast, including common boating locations and marinas.
For sailors, electrical work must be system-based. A lithium battery bank is not a standalone upgrade. It changes alternator behaviour, charger settings, fusing, cable sizing, emergency isolation, solar regulation and inverter use. A refrigeration problem may really be a voltage problem. A windlass fault may be a cable-size or battery-location problem. Autopilot issues may be caused by voltage drop under load.
A Brisbane yacht that is preparing for the Sandy Strait, Gold Coast, Mooloolaba, Lady Musgrave, Bundaberg, the Whitsundays or offshore work should have the electrical system documented before leaving. A wiring diagram, fuse list, battery settings, charging sources and clear labels are worth more than another gadget.
Navigation, VHF, AIS and Moreton Bay electronics
Moreton Bay demands reliable navigation electronics because the bay is shallow, wide, channelled and full of different users. Sailors share water with ferries, commercial traffic, cargo ships, fishing vessels, powerboats, trailer boats, jet skis, dinghies, kayaks, race fleets and cruising yachts. The bay also has sandbanks, marine-park zones, no-anchoring areas, go-slow areas, shipping channels and island anchorages.
Marine electronics should not be treated as decoration. AIS, VHF, chartplotter, depth, GPS, wind instruments, autopilot, navigation lights and battery monitoring all matter when a boat is crossing from Manly to Tangalooma, working the southern bay, entering the Brisbane River, crossing shipping channels or departing for Mooloolaba or Southport.
BOM’s Moreton Bay Forecast is the official local marine forecast, and BOM notes the forecast is also available via scheduled marine-radio broadcasts. The Bureau’s marine weather guidance includes Moreton Bay as one of the local waters forecast areas used by sailors and boaters.
For the YouSail version of this guide, this section should link naturally to YouSail Guides and YouSail FAQs, because electronics service and seamanship belong together.
Refrigeration, air conditioning, plumbing and water systems
Brisbane’s climate makes refrigeration a serious cruising system. A fridge or freezer that works acceptably in winter may struggle in humid summer weather. A yacht with poor insulation, old wiring, weak batteries or low ventilation may blame the compressor when the real problem is the whole power and cooling system.
The same is true of marine air conditioning. A yacht on shore power at Rivergate or Manly may run air conditioning comfortably at the dock, but that does not mean the system makes sense at anchor. Raw-water pumps, strainers, condensate drains, shore-power loads, inverter limits and generator capacity all matter.
Aus Marine Services says it provides marine plumbing services across Brisbane, Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast. Brisbane’s broader marine-service network also includes electrical, refrigeration, pump, plumbing and water-system providers through marina and trade precincts. For sailors, the key is to handle refrigeration, water, plumbing and electrical design together. A watermaker without power planning is not a cruising solution. A freezer without battery capacity is a generator schedule. A marine toilet without pump-out or holding-tank planning is a problem in a marine park.
Before cruising Moreton Bay, check freshwater pumps, bilge pumps, toilet hoses, holding tank, pump-out fittings, seacocks, refrigeration drains, water tanks, deck fills, vents, strainers and spare parts.
Moorings, anchoring and Moreton Bay Marine Park
Moreton Bay is not just a sailing area. It is a marine park with specific rules. The Queensland Parks guidance says visitors must follow rules in go-slow and no-anchoring areas, and that anchoring for more than 14 consecutive days in one area or more than 30 days in a 60-day period in one area requires a permit. It also states that a person must not anchor or moor a vessel in the marine park for more than 120 days in any 12-month period.
Moreton Bay Marine Park has go-slow areas to help protect turtles and dugongs from boat strike, and the park includes many tidal waters, river estuaries and waters extending seaward to the limit of Queensland waters. Queensland also publishes maps for public moorings and no-anchoring areas in Moreton Bay Marine Park.
This matters for service planning. A sailor who intends to live on the hook, wait for parts, work slowly through repairs or store a boat informally around the bay needs to understand the time limits and rules. A boat with unreliable ground tackle, tired batteries, poor solar, no holding tank, weak dinghy, unreliable engine or questionable weather plan is more likely to make bad decisions in sensitive areas.
For Brisbane sailors, anchoring gear is a service category. Check anchor size, chain, shackles, swivel if fitted, snubber, windlass, deck switches, bow roller, cleats, chain locker drainage and bitter end before cruising Moreton Bay. Anchoring in sand near a familiar bay is one thing. Anchoring around reef-protection areas, seagrass, public moorings, current, wake and changing wind is another.
Canvas, covers and upholstery
Canvas matters in Brisbane because the sun and humidity work hard on boats. Boom covers, headsail UV strips, dodgers, biminis, clears, hatch covers, cockpit cushions and interior upholstery age quickly if they are not designed for the local climate.
A Brisbane canvas job should consider UV, rain, ventilation, mildew, sheet leads, winch access, traveller access, boom clearance, reefing lines, visibility and whether the cover will actually be used. A boom cover that is awkward stays off. A dodger that blocks visibility becomes a safety problem. Clears that fog or distort vision make docking harder. Cockpit cushions that hold water become mould farms.
Manly, Rivergate, Scarborough and Redlands all sit inside broader trade networks where trimmers, canvas makers and upholstery providers work across marinas. The best approach for sailors is to combine canvas work with sail-care planning. Headsail UV strips, boom covers, lazy bags, biminis and hatch covers all protect more expensive systems.
Chandlery, rope, hardware and emergency parts
Chandlery access is a major advantage of basing a yacht near Manly, Scarborough, Rivergate or a full-service marina. Rope, shackles, blocks, hose, clamps, sealants, fuses, terminals, winch grease, impellers, belts, filters, anodes, antifoul, bilge-pump parts and safety gear are what keep small problems from becoming lost weekends.
The practical Brisbane habit is to document everything. Keep engine filter numbers, impeller size, belt size, fuel-filter type, seacock sizes, hose diameters, anode type, rope diameters, anchor chain size, winch model, battery type, alternator rating, sail measurements and VHF details in one maintenance file.
That file matters when a boat is stuck in Manly before a race, at Scarborough before a northbound weather window, at Redland Bay before island cruising, or at Rivergate halfway through a refit.
Sailing clubs as service intelligence
Brisbane’s sailing clubs are part of the service network. They are where owners learn which rigger understands a class, which mechanic works on moorings, which sailmaker handles local racing sails, which yard is busy, which berth is exposed, which contractors are approved, and what breaks most often on local boats.
Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is the central keelboat, dinghy, racing and cruising institution in Manly. Wynnum Manly Yacht Club is a long-running bayside club for boat owners, sailors, racing, cruising and community connection. Darling Point Sailing Squadron gives Manly its dinghy and skiff culture from Norfolk Point with easy access to Waterloo Bay. Brisbane Sailing Squadron is based at Vic Lucas Park in Bulimba on the Brisbane River and says it was established in 1921. The Multihull Yacht Club of Queensland is based around Manly and has links to Brisbane to Gladstone multihull racing culture.
Use YouSail Sailing Clubs when the reader needs local knowledge, race fleets, training, crew pathways or a practical community connection rather than a single contractor.
Weather, tides and local conditions
Brisbane service planning is weather planning. A short motor from Manly to a haul-out, a delivery to Rivergate, a crossing to Scarborough, a sea trial in Moreton Bay or a trip down to the Redlands can all be affected by wind, tide, storms, visibility and bay chop.
The Bureau of Meteorology publishes the Moreton Bay Forecast for local waters, and the same forecast is available via scheduled marine-radio broadcasts. BOM’s local-waters guidance identifies Moreton Bay as one of the dedicated local waters forecast areas used by sailors and boaters.
Moreton Bay’s weather trap is that it can feel protected but still become uncomfortable quickly. Northerlies can make some anchorages and crossings unpleasant. Southeasterlies can build a short bay chop. Summer storms can arrive fast. Tidal flow and shallow water can make small seas steeper than expected. A boat with engine, rig, battery or steering problems should not be moved across the bay just because a service booking exists.
Before moving a boat for service, check the Moreton Bay forecast, warnings, tide, marina instructions, fuel state, engine condition, VHF, safety gear and whether the boat can safely complete the move if the weather changes.
Safety, marine park rules and responsible boating
Moreton Bay is one of Brisbane’s best assets, but it is not an unregulated backyard. It contains sensitive habitats, go-slow areas, no-anchoring areas, public moorings and marine-park zoning.
Queensland Parks says boaters should follow go-slow and no-anchoring area rules, use public moorings within their limits, and comply with anchoring time limits. Public moorings in the marine park have a two-hour time limit, and the guidance lists different vessel-size limits for A Class and C Class moorings. Queensland’s public moorings guidance also warns that reef-protection markers are not designed to hold the weight of a boat like a mooring.
For sailors, this changes the maintenance checklist. The boat should have a reliable engine, functioning VHF, current charts or electronic mapping, working navigation lights, dependable anchor system, properly serviced bilge pumps, holding tank or responsible waste plan, and enough battery capacity to wait safely if the weather changes.
A poorly maintained boat is more likely to damage seagrass, misuse moorings, drag anchor, call for rescue or make rushed decisions near sensitive areas.
Buying a yacht in Brisbane
Buying a yacht in Brisbane should begin with where the boat lies. A boat in Manly can often be surveyed, lifted, rig-checked and mechanically inspected within the Manly service ecosystem. A boat at Rivergate may already be close to heavy trades and project refit. A boat at Scarborough may be easier to inspect northside. A southern bay boat may be better evaluated at Redland City Marina or Redlands Coast Marina before moving it.
A proper Brisbane sailing-yacht purchase should include survey, haul-out, engine inspection, rig inspection, sail review and electrical review if the boat has significant solar, lithium, inverter, refrigeration, watermaker, windlass or navigation-electronics systems.
Moreton Bay boats deserve specific checks for UV damage, mould, deck leaks, corrosion, old standing rigging, worn sails, seacock age, fouling, electrical modifications, batteries, cooling system, mooring history and storm preparation. If the boat has been sitting in warm water, assume the underwater story matters until the hull is dry and inspected.

Preparing for coastal passages from Brisbane
Brisbane is a launch point in several directions. Northbound sailors head toward Mooloolaba, Double Island Point, the Wide Bay Bar, the Sandy Strait, Bundaberg, Lady Musgrave, the Capricorn Coast and the Whitsundays. Southbound sailors may head to the Gold Coast Seaway, northern NSW, Yamba, Coffs Harbour and Sydney. More adventurous routes head offshore or across the South Pacific.
Before leaving Brisbane, service the systems that become harder to fix once the city is behind you: engine, fuel, cooling, charging, batteries, solar, autopilot, rigging, reefing lines, sails, steering, bilge pumps, seacocks, anchor gear, VHF, AIS, navigation lights, refrigeration, water system, safety gear and spares.
Brisbane’s advantage is that it has both bay-based yacht services and heavy-service infrastructure. Use Manly and Moreton Bay service providers for sailing-specific work, then use Rivergate or The Yard Brisbane when the job becomes a serious refit or heavy lift.

Brisbane marine services FAQ
Where is the best place in Brisbane for sailing-yacht services?
Manly is the strongest all-round sailing-service precinct because it includes Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, East Coast Marina, Wynnum Manly Yacht Club, Darling Point Sailing Squadron, rigging, electrical, marina services, boatyards, training, racing and Moreton Bay knowledge. Rivergate and Hemmant are better for major refit, heavy lifting, large-vessel work and project-managed repair.
Where should I haul out a yacht in Brisbane?
Start with the boat’s location and size. RQYS and East Coast Marina list 35-tonne travel lifts at Manly. Scarborough Marina lists a 35-tonne travel lift on the north side. Redland City Marina lists a 30-tonne Sea Lift and slipway for vessels up to 65 feet in the southern bay. Rivergate and The Yard Brisbane suit larger or more complex projects with much greater lift and hardstand capacity.
Is Rivergate suitable for private sailing yachts?
Yes, especially for yachts needing serious refit, project management, customs clearance, hardstand, engineering, electrical, shipwright work, painting, absentee care or multiple trades. It is not always necessary for routine Manly or Moreton Bay yacht work, but it is one of Brisbane’s key heavy-service hubs.
Is Manly the best base for Brisbane sailors?
For many sailors, yes. Manly Boat Harbour combines RQYS, WMYC, East Coast Marina, DPSS, rigging, marine electrical, boatyard services, dry stack, sail service, yacht training and direct Moreton Bay access. It is the most natural starting point for everyday yacht maintenance and sailing-specific service.
Where should I look for yacht rigging in Brisbane?
Start around Manly. Rope Solutions Rigging says it operates from a fitted-out workshop and rigging shed on Brisbane’s Bayside in Manly and services Brisbane and the greater Moreton Bay region.
Where should I look for sailmakers in Brisbane?
North Sails Brisbane, LR Sails and OneSails Brisbane are relevant starting points. North Sails lists a Brisbane sail loft, LR Sails services Brisbane, Manly, Scarborough, Redcliffe, Rivergate, Raby Bay and surrounding areas, and OneSails Brisbane says it can produce and service sails from one-design to maxi-yachts.
What official weather should Brisbane sailors use?
Use the Bureau of Meteorology Moreton Bay Forecast for local waters, plus marine warnings, tides and coastal waters forecasts when leaving the bay. BOM states that the Moreton Bay Forecast is also available via scheduled marine-radio broadcasts.
What Moreton Bay Marine Park rules matter to sailors?
Moreton Bay Marine Park has go-slow areas, no-anchoring areas, public moorings and anchoring time limits. Queensland Parks says anchoring more than 14 consecutive days in one area or more than 30 days in a 60-day period in one area requires a permit, and a person must not anchor or moor in the marine park for more than 120 days in any 12-month period.
Where should southern Moreton Bay boats look for service?
Start with Redland City Marina and Redlands Coast Marina, especially for hardstand, lift, slipway, multihull-friendly handling and southern bay access. These are practical for boats around Cleveland, Redland Bay, Peel Island, Stradbroke and the southern Moreton Bay islands.
Where should north Moreton Bay boats look for service?
Scarborough Marina is the natural first stop for many northside boats. It offers a full-service marina, 35-tonne travel lift, hardstand, drystack, fuel and onsite marine providers.
Final Brisbane sailor’s guide
Brisbane gives sailors a rare combination: a major river-based refit and shipyard corridor, plus one of Australia’s strongest bay sailing precincts at Manly. That makes the city useful for everything from a simple sail repair to a serious refit.
Use Manly first when the work is sailing-specific: rigging, sails, yacht-club advice, marina access, antifoul, dry storage, electrical, training, racing, cruising preparation and Moreton Bay knowledge. Use Rivergate when the job becomes a bigger refit, customs-clearance stop, engineering project, heavy service period or absentee-owner situation. Use The Yard Brisbane when the vessel needs large-scale lift, hardstand, shed work, paint, blasting, machinery support or serious refit capacity.
Use Scarborough when the boat lives northside or is cruising northern Moreton Bay. Use Redland City Marina and Redlands Coast Marina when the boat is in the southern bay, Cleveland, Redland Bay, Stradbroke, Peel Island or the island routes.

Haul-out / Slipway when the boat needs to come out.

A well-serviced Brisbane yacht is not only easier to sail around Moreton Bay. It is safer in shallow water, better prepared for summer storms, more respectful of the marine park, easier to insure, easier to sell and far more ready for the coast beyond Cape Moreton.
