Perth is one of Australia’s most distinctive sailing-service regions because it is not built around one harbour. It is split between the Indian Ocean, Fremantle, the Swan River, the Canning River, Rottnest Island, Cockburn Sound, Hillarys, Mindarie, Henderson, Rockingham and Mandurah. A Perth sailor may keep a yacht on the river, race offshore from Fremantle, day sail from Hillarys, cruise to Rottnest, store a boat near Mindarie, refit at Fremantle, solve a diesel problem in East Fremantle, or use Mandurah as a southern service base.
That geography changes everything. A Swan River yacht does not need the same service plan as an ocean-going Fremantle boat. A boat preparing for Rottnest, Garden Island, Carnac, Rockingham or a west coast passage needs a different checklist to a river racer. A yacht going north toward Jurien Bay, Geraldton, the Abrolhos or Exmouth needs to solve problems before leaving the Perth service zone. A boat heading south toward Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton or Albany needs to think about weather, service gaps and Indian Ocean exposure before departure.
Use the YouSail Marine Directory as the starting point for service discovery, and use the YouSail Sailing Map when location matters more than the business name. For Perth, location matters constantly because Fremantle, Crawley, Applecross, Hillarys, Mindarie, Henderson, Rockingham and Mandurah are different service worlds.
Perth as a sailing-service region
Perth’s sailing-service network is best understood through six zones.
Fremantle is the strongest ocean-yacht service hub. It has Fremantle Sailing Club, Royal Perth Yacht Club Fremantle Annexe, Challenger Harbour, Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, Blue HQ, sail lofts, riggers, shipwrights, diesel specialists, marine electricians, chandlery, hardstand, refit services and immediate ocean access. Fremantle Sailing Club publishes boatyard facilities, haul-out options, work areas, secure work berths and registered contractors across shipwrighting, rigging, chandlery, marine support, diesel, antifoul, detailing, management, boilermaking and repairs.
The Swan and Canning Rivers are the river-yacht and club-service world. Royal Perth Yacht Club at Crawley, South of Perth Yacht Club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Claremont Yacht Club, East Fremantle Yacht Club, Mounts Bay Sailing Club and other river clubs shape local sailing, dinghy storage, keelboat racing, hardstand, ramps, cranes, travel lift access and mooring logic. South of Perth Yacht Club says it has water pens, hard standing for trailerable yachts and powerboats, undercover dinghy storage, a marine travel lift and slipping facilities.
Hillarys and Mindarie are the northern metro coastal service and marina layer. Hillarys Boat Harbour is described by Transport WA as one of Perth’s premier waterfront destinations, with marina facilities, launching, pen and mooring options, plus boat lifting, storage, maintenance and chandlery nearby. Mindarie Marina offers long-term and casual berth rentals, boat ramp and launching facilities, and secure floating jetties north of Perth.
Henderson and Cockburn Sound are the heavy-marine, commercial and industrial layer. DevelopmentWA describes the Australian Marine Complex at Henderson as integral to Western Australia’s shipbuilding, repair and maintenance industry, supporting commercial and defence vessel construction and maintenance. The City of Cockburn describes the AMC as Western Australia’s leading shipbuilding and sustainment industrial precinct, with more than 150 businesses operating within its premises.
Rottnest Island is the cruising destination that shapes Perth service planning. It is close enough to feel easy and far enough to expose poor preparation. Rottnest Island Authority says swing moorings are located around Thomson Bay, Geordie Bay and Longreach Bay, and drinkable water is available at Geordie Bay Jetty and Thomson Bay Fuel Jetty.
Mandurah is the southern fallback and service corridor. Mandurah Ocean Marina is managed by the City of Mandurah and includes marina services and facilities, while local businesses around the marina support marine electronics, mechanical servicing, hardstand work, antifoul and general repairs.

For Perth, the YouSail Sailing Map is especially important because service decisions are geographical. A rigger in O’Connor, a sailmaker in Fremantle, a mechanic at Crawley, a hardstand at South of Perth, a marina at Hillarys and a fallback in Mandurah may all be “Perth” online, but they are not equally useful for the same boat.
Fremantle: Perth’s strongest ocean-yacht service hub
Fremantle is the natural service base for serious ocean-going Perth yachts. It has direct access to the Indian Ocean, proximity to Rottnest, Challenger Harbour, Fremantle Sailing Club, Royal Perth Yacht Club Fremantle Annexe, Fishing Boat Harbour, Blue HQ, hardstand, boat lifting, sail lofts, riggers, shipwrights, mechanics, marine electricians, chandlery and a deep sailing culture.
Fremantle Sailing Club is one of the biggest service anchors. Its boatyard information says the club offers versatile haul-out options, work areas, secure work berths and tradespeople for vessel maintenance. Its registered contractor list includes categories such as boat management, detailing, shipwrights, rigging, chandlery, marine support, marine diesel, engine repair and maintenance, antifoul, polishing, PropSpeed, service and repairs.
Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Fremantle Annexe gives members an ocean-side facility in Fremantle with hardstand cranes, dinghy ramp and marina support. RPYC’s hardstand information says the club works with onsite shipwright Bay Marine Maintenance to provide boat-lifting and maintenance hardstanding.
Blue HQ adds important lift and yard capacity in Fremantle. Blue HQ says it has access to 210-tonne, 60-tonne and 30-tonne marine travel lifts, and offers turnkey boat lifting and maintenance with pickup from the pen, delivery to yard, wash and return.
Fremantle is best for annual haul-out, antifoul, rigging, sail repairs, diesel service, shipwright work, pre-purchase surveys, Rottnest preparation, offshore preparation, pre-race work and repairs that need a proper marine precinct rather than a river berth.
Royal Perth Yacht Club: Crawley and Fremantle
Royal Perth Yacht Club is unusual because it gives Perth sailors both a river base and an ocean-side Fremantle base. Crawley Marina sits in sheltered waters at Matilda Bay, less than 10 minutes from Perth CBD, and the club says it is suitable for vessels wanting to cruise on the Swan River or head out to the ocean.
The Fremantle Annexe is the ocean-side arm. It is located in Fremantle and provides hardstand bays, hardstand cranes and a dinghy ramp. That split makes RPYC important in this guide because it reflects the Perth sailing reality: many owners move between river sailing, river storage, ocean sailing and Rottnest cruising.
For sailors, Crawley is useful for river-based sailing, club racing, Swan River access, boat storage, ramps and smaller-scale maintenance. Fremantle is better for ocean access, Rottnest staging, offshore races, haul-out, hardstand and work that benefits from being closer to the marine-trades concentration.
A yacht owner should not treat these two locations as interchangeable. The river is convenient. Fremantle is more service-dense for ocean yachts.
South of Perth Yacht Club and the Swan Canning service network
South of Perth Yacht Club is one of Perth’s strongest river-service nodes. It is located at Coffee Point on the Swan and Canning Rivers and says it offers water pens, hard standing for trailerable yachts and powerboats, undercover dinghy storage, marine travel lift and slipping facilities. Its boat-facility information says the club has 145 hardstand bays ranging from 7 m to 12 m and a marine travel lift on the Eastern Hardstand that runs five days a week for members and non-members to haul out and work on boats.
This matters because many Perth sailors are river sailors first. A keelboat or trailerable yacht based at Applecross, Crawley, Claremont, Nedlands, East Fremantle or Mounts Bay may not need to go to Fremantle for every job. A river club with hardstand, cranes, ramps and travel lift access can solve many maintenance tasks close to home.
The Swan and Canning Rivers also have specific mooring and jetty rules. Transport WA says the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure manages public-use jetties in the Swan and Canning Riverpark, and people with three months or more DTMI vessel accommodation at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour or Fremantle Challenger Harbour can use DTMI-managed Swan and Canning jetties for up to 15 minutes. Transport WA also administers swing mooring licences in WA waters, including the Swan and Canning River metro area.
For river sailors, service planning must include bridge, draft, mast, pen, mooring, ramp and contractor access. A mechanic may be able to attend a river club. A sail can be removed and delivered to Fremantle. A rigging job may need club permission, a crane or a move to a different facility. A hull job may require hauling at South of Perth, Crawley, Fremantle or another yard.
Hillarys and the northern metro coast
Hillarys is the most important northern metro boating precinct for Perth sailors. It serves Hillarys, Sorrento, Ocean Reef, Mullaloo, Joondalup, the northern suburbs and boats heading north along the coast.
Transport WA describes Hillarys Boat Harbour as one of Perth’s premier waterfront destinations, with marina facilities that include boat launching, pen and mooring options for recreational and commercial vessels. It also notes that a boat lifting, storage and maintenance facility and chandlery are located next to and west of the boat-launching ramps.
Hillarys Yacht Club says it sits in Hillarys Marina overlooking the Indian Ocean and offers facilities for boating enthusiasts. Its pen-accommodation page says the club has 107 floating pens and 163 fixed pens ranging from 8 m to 20 m. Its service and facilities page says Hillarys Yacht Club Lifting Service provides boat lifting and is located at the eastern end of the club.
Hillarys is best for north-coast berthing, local servicing, club sailing, boat lifting, chandlery, northern suburb convenience, short coastal runs, Rottnest approaches from the north and boats that do not need to travel south to Fremantle.
Mindarie and Two Rocks
Mindarie extends the northern service geography beyond Hillarys. The Marina Mindarie says it offers long-term and casual berth rentals, boat ramp and launching facilities, and secure floating jetties accessed through a secure gatehouse system. It is a practical coastal base for northern suburbs sailors, weekend cruising, fishing, diving and owners who want a marina north of Perth’s central coast.
Two Rocks is further north again and is more relevant as a coastal staging and fallback point. Transport WA says Two Rocks Marina is 63 km north of Perth, services the rock lobster industry and recreational vessels, and includes boat pens, berths, a boat ramp, service wharf, boat lifting facility, hardstand and fuel facility.
For sailors heading north, these places matter because Fremantle is not always the logical service or shelter point. A northbound route toward Lancelin, Jurien Bay, Geraldton and the Abrolhos needs a different mental map from a Rottnest weekend. Hillarys, Mindarie and Two Rocks become part of the staging network.
Henderson, Cockburn Sound and the heavy-marine layer
Henderson is not where every private sailor goes for routine maintenance, but it is impossible to ignore in a Perth marine-services guide. It is the heavy industrial marine centre of Western Australia.
DevelopmentWA says the Australian Marine Complex Shipbuilding Precinct is integral to Western Australia’s shipbuilding, repair and maintenance industry and supports commercial and naval vessel construction and maintenance. The City of Cockburn describes the AMC as Western Australia’s leading shipbuilding and sustainment industrial precinct, located 23 km south of the city and containing more than 150 businesses serving marine, defence and resource industries.
For private yacht owners, Henderson matters in three situations.
First, when the vessel is large, complex or requires industrial-level fabrication, coatings, engineering or project support.
Second, when specialist trades in the Cockburn, Bibra Lake, Henderson and Naval Base area are involved in engines, electrical, fabrication, shipwrighting or refit work.
Third, when the boat’s cruising area includes Cockburn Sound, Garden Island, Rockingham, Mangles Bay, Carnac, Woodman Point or the southern metro coast.
Henderson is the industrial background that makes Perth’s marine workforce stronger. It is not always the first service stop for a 35 ft cruiser, but it shapes the depth of marine capability available south of Fremantle.
Rottnest Island and why it changes Perth service planning
Rottnest Island is close enough to Perth to feel casual, but it exposes maintenance weaknesses quickly. A yacht may leave Fremantle or Hillarys in beautiful weather, but poor engine reliability, weak batteries, bad anchoring gear, tired rigging, old sails or inaccurate weather reading can turn a simple island weekend into a serious situation.
Rottnest Island Authority says swing moorings are located around Thomson Bay, Geordie Bay and Longreach Bay, and that beach pens are available as part of the boating experience. It also says beach anchoring is allowed at Thomson Bay, Longreach Bay and Geordie Bay, temporary moorings are not permitted, and anchoring within the Rottnest Island Marine Reserve still requires paying the admission fee.
For sailors, Rottnest changes the service checklist. The boat needs a reliable engine, clean fuel, functioning VHF, working anchor light, charged batteries, enough water, checked bilge pumps, good mooring lines, safe tender, working navigation lights, and a plan for weather shifts. A boat that is barely maintained on the river may not be ready for Rottnest just because the island is visible from the coast.
Rottnest should be treated as the test of Perth service readiness.
Mandurah as the southern fallback
Mandurah is not “Perth”, but it belongs in a Perth sailor’s service guide because it is the practical southern fallback for many boats. Yachts moving down the coast, based south of the city, or operating between Cockburn Sound, Rockingham, Peel, Dawesville and Bunbury may find Mandurah more sensible than returning to Fremantle.
The City of Mandurah manages Mandurah Ocean Marina and publishes marina services and facilities information. Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club says its marina gives easy access to the Indian Ocean and Peel Estuary, and it requires insurance documentation with $10 million legal liability cover for marina interest processes.
Total Marine Repairs is based at Mandurah Ocean Marina and says customers can have boats serviced while antifouling, polishing, upholstery repairs and other work are completed by businesses in the yard. It covers work from repowers and fit-outs to annual service and minor repairs. Mack Marine also describes marine electronics work at Mandurah Marina, including Garmin and Raymarine dealer support near the hardstand.
For Perth sailors heading south, Mandurah can be a service stop rather than a detour. It is especially relevant for Peel, Dawesville, Rockingham, Safety Bay, southern metro owners and boats preparing for Bunbury or the south-west coast.
Marinas and berthing in Perth
Perth marina choice is not only about the berth. It determines access to trades, weather exposure, Rottnest logistics, river access, ocean access, hardstand, pump-out, fuel, ramps, chandlery, parking, security and club support.
Fremantle Sailing Club is the strongest ocean-facing sailing marina environment. Its boatyard, hardstand, registered contractors and club infrastructure make it suitable for serious yacht maintenance as well as sailing.
Royal Perth Yacht Club provides the dual Crawley and Fremantle pattern that suits many Perth sailors. Crawley gives city and river access, while Fremantle gives ocean-side support.
South of Perth Yacht Club is a major river option with water pens, hardstand, dinghy storage, travel lift and slipping facilities.
Hillarys and Mindarie support northern metro sailors with marina, lifting, berthing and coastal convenience.
Use YouSail Marina Service when comparing marinas, berths, hardstand access, fuel, storage, contractor access and sailing locations.
Haul-out, hardstand and antifouling
Haul-out is the moment Perth sailors stop guessing. A boat may feel fine in the pen but hide anode depletion, prop damage, shaft play, saildrive corrosion, rudder movement, keel-joint marks, old antifoul layers, seacock problems, osmosis, through-hull age or transducer leaks.
Fremantle has the deepest private-yacht haul-out layer. Fremantle Sailing Club publishes boatyard, haul-out, work area and trade information. Blue HQ offers 210-tonne, 60-tonne and 30-tonne travel-lift access and a turnkey lift and maintenance service. Bay Marine says it has boat hardstanding bays with power and water and 32-tonne boat lifting capacity. Aquarama Slipways in East Fremantle says it handles craft up to 40 ft onsite and carries out larger work at Fremantle Sailing Club.
South of Perth Yacht Club’s travel lift and hardstand make it important for Swan Canning boats. Hillarys has lifting and maintenance support on the northern coast. Mandurah becomes a southern fallback for lift, hardstand and service work.
A Perth haul-out should include hull wash, antifoul assessment, anode check, propeller and shaft inspection, saildrive inspection if fitted, rudder-bearing check, keel joint inspection, seacock exercise, through-hull inspection, transducer check, grounding-mark check and a photo record before relaunch.
Use YouSail Haul-out / Slipway for this service path.
Shipwrights, fibreglass and structural repairs
A sailing yacht’s structure carries sailing loads. Chainplates, mast step, bulkheads, deck core, keel floors, rudder bearings, traveller pads, winch bases, stanchions, bow rollers and cockpit drains all matter. A small leak can become a structural issue, especially if the boat lives in salt air and sun.
Fremantle Shipwrights says it provides boat repairs and maintenance in Fremantle and Perth, including fibreglass work, insurance work, restorations and refits. A1 Marine Total Care says it provides professional shipwrighting and boat repairs at marinas or boatyards using mobile servicing. Dingo Yachts says it has a secure workshop in Fremantle and provides yacht repairs and maintenance, with a mobile shipwright service. Cordina Marine is a Henderson family-owned boatbuilding business that lists shipwright services.
Perth sailors should call a shipwright for deck leaks, chainplate leaks, soft core, cracked gelcoat around loaded fittings, damaged hatches, rudder issues, keel movement, collision damage, osmosis, timber repairs, rotten backing pads, bow-roller reinforcement, traveller support, winch pad reinforcement and insurance repairs.
Use YouSail Boatbuilding & Repairs for this path.
Rigging, rope and deck hardware
Rigging is one of Perth’s strongest yacht-specific service categories. The combination of river racing, offshore racing, Rottnest trips, Indian Ocean passages and strong summer sea-breeze sailing means rigs work hard.
Rigging WA says it is a Fremantle-based rigging company with a large workshop in O’Connor, specialist equipment and extensive rigging and rope stock. It says it can access yacht clubs and marinas throughout WA, arrange up-mast repairs onsite, conduct rig inspections and complete rigging replacements. Yacht Rigging Solutions describes Perth yacht rigging services, including furling-system installation and maintenance. Fremantle Sailing Club’s registered contractor list includes Yacht Grot 1985 for rigging, chandlery and marine support.
Perth rigging decisions should consider how the boat is used. A river boat that never leaves protected water has different risk exposure to a yacht racing offshore from Fremantle or heading to Rottnest, Geraldton, the Abrolhos or Albany. But old standing rigging is still old standing rigging. Salt, UV, vibration, racing loads and hidden chainplate leaks do not care whether the boat is “only local”.
Call a rigger if the standing rigging age is unknown, swages are stained, wires are broken, turnbuckles are seized, lifelines are old, chainplates leak, halyards chafe, mast wiring fails, the furler binds, spreaders are damaged, the mast pumps or insurance asks for rig documentation.
Sailmakers and sail repairs
Perth has strong sailmaking because the city supports river racing, offshore racing, dinghies, keelboats, multihulls, cruising boats and Rottnest sailing.
UK Sailmakers Fremantle describes itself as Western Australia’s only truly international sail loft and says it offers quick repair service, racing and cruising sails, multihull and dinghy sails, sail repairs, recuts, furling systems, sail hardware, dodgers, biminis, shade and canvas products. OneSails Perth says it is located within 20 minutes of Swan River clubs and 10 minutes from Fremantle, offering repair services and design consultation for sailing boats from dinghies through to superyachts. K1 Marine Trimming in Fremantle says it services Perth yacht clubs and marinas and has a qualified sailmaker on the team.
For Perth sailors, sail care should be planned before summer. The sea breeze is part of the joy of sailing here, but it exposes poor stitching, tired UV strips, flogging damage, weak batten pockets and poor reefing setups quickly. A headsail that looks fine furled at the pen can open up badly on the first strong day. A mainsail with tired reef patches can fail when the crew most needs the reef.
A proper sail check should include leech stitching, UV strip, luff tape, slides, cars, batten pockets, reef patches, headboard, clew, tack, previous repairs, furling shape, boom cover and lazy bag.
Marine diesel, engines, saildrives and mechanical service
Perth has strong diesel and mechanical support across Fremantle, the river clubs, Hillarys, Mindarie and Mandurah. The right mechanic depends on where the boat is and whether the job can be done afloat.
Bluewater Marine Diesel says it is a marine diesel specialist based in Fremantle. Swansea Marine says it caters for Perth and Fremantle boat owners and skippers along the WA coast, including yacht engine servicing, maintenance, repairs and inspections. Collings Marine says its mobile service covers Perth metro yacht clubs and marinas and provides repairs across WA. Bay Marine says it services sterndrives, outboards, diesel and petrol inboards from Crawley, close to yacht clubs in Perth and Fremantle. Mariner-style support is also visible through Fremantle Sailing Club’s contractor list, which includes marine engine repair and maintenance service providers.
The mechanical distinction is simple. Oil, filters, belts, impellers, cooling checks, fuel bleeding, alternator diagnosis, starting issues and many engine services can be done at the berth. Saildrive seals, propeller problems, shaft vibration, cutlass bearings, anode issues, underwater corrosion and some alignment problems need haul-out.
A Perth yacht going to Rottnest should not treat engine service casually. A reliable engine matters when leaving Fremantle, returning through traffic, dealing with calm patches, avoiding lee-shore risk or getting home when the sea breeze is stronger than expected.
Marine electrical, electronics and charging systems
Electrical reliability is one of the most important service categories for Perth sailors because modern yachts depend on power. Batteries, alternator charging, solar, shore power, inverters, bilge pumps, windlass, autopilot, AIS, VHF, GPS, chartplotter, radar, refrigeration and navigation lights all overlap.
Perth Marine Electrical says its marine electricians are trained to industry and manufacturer standards and provide advice on design, safety and practicality for vessel requirements. Maritime Electronic Services says it supplies and installs watermakers, wind generators, solar panels and marine electronics, performs electrical repairs in Fremantle and Perth, and is an authorised WA service agent for Raymarine, Garmin, Simrad and Lowrance.
North Coast Auto and Marine Electrics says it provides mobile marine electrics in Perth, with more than 40 years of marine-electrics experience. Leisure Marine Services in Perth’s northern suburbs says it supplies and installs marine electronics from Garmin to Furuno.
For sailors, electrical work should not be a pile of added gadgets. Lithium, solar, alternator charging, shore charging, inverters, windlass loads, autopilot draw and refrigeration should be designed as one system. A Rottnest weekend boat can often be simple. A WA coastal-cruising boat heading north or south needs clearer documentation, spares and energy planning.
A good Perth marine-electrical job should leave the owner with labelled cables, fuse logic, charger settings, battery documentation, solar-controller settings, alternator-protection notes, emergency isolation and a basic diagram.
Navigation electronics, autopilot and communications
Perth sailing uses both protected and exposed waters. The same boat may sail on the Swan River, race offshore from Fremantle, cross to Rottnest, head north to Hillarys or Mindarie, or move south toward Mandurah and Cockburn Sound. That mix makes reliable electronics important.
Maritime Electronic Services works with Raymarine, Garmin, Simrad and Lowrance, while servicing Perth metro yacht clubs and wider WA. Leisure Marine Services supplies and installs premium marine electronics in Perth’s northern suburbs. Mandurah’s Mack Marine describes Garmin and Raymarine support at Mandurah Marina for boats needing southern service.
A Perth yacht should check VHF, AIS, GPS, depth, wind, speed, chartplotter, autopilot, radar if fitted, navigation lights and power supply before leaving the local marina system. A weak autopilot may be tolerable for short sails but can become a fatigue problem on longer WA coastal legs. A poor VHF installation is not acceptable if the boat is crossing open water to Rottnest or operating along the coast.
Moorings, pens, jetties and Rottnest access
Mooring rules are a major part of Perth boating. Transport WA says it administers swing mooring licences in WA waters, including the Swan and Canning River metro area. It also says mooring control areas with high demand may have waitlists, including Swan Canning Riverpark and Mangles Bay.
Rottnest is its own system. Rottnest Island Authority says swing moorings are located around Thomson Bay, Geordie Bay and Longreach Bay. It also says beach anchoring is allowed at Thomson Bay, Longreach Bay and Geordie Bay, but temporary moorings are not permitted and admission fees still apply for anchoring in the Marine Reserve.
For sailors, the service takeaway is that mooring and anchoring systems are not paperwork. They are safety systems. A yacht should have good mooring lines, strong cleats, chafe protection, working windlass if fitted, correct anchor and chain, a reliable tender, charged batteries and a weather plan before using Rottnest, river moorings or coastal anchorages.
Canvas, covers and upholstery
Perth’s sun is brutal on canvas, clears, stitching, UV strips and upholstery. A yacht sitting at Fremantle, Crawley, Hillarys, Mindarie or Mandurah can lose canvas life even when it barely leaves the berth.
K1 Marine Trimming says it specialises in marine trimming and repair services for yachts and powerboats and is insured to service yacht clubs and marinas across the Perth region. UK Sailmakers Fremantle also lists dodgers, biminis, shade and canvas products alongside sail work.
For sailors, canvas is not just comfort. A good boom cover protects the mainsail. A good headsail UV strip extends sail life. A bimini reduces heat and helps crew endurance. A dodger protects the companionway. Covers protect instruments, winches, hatches and cockpit lockers. Poorly designed canvas can block visibility, make winch access worse or interfere with reefing.
Perth sailors should inspect stitching, clears, zips, webbing, elastic, frame fittings, chafe points and whether the cover design actually works while sailing.
Chandlery, rope, hardware and spares
Chandlery in Perth is not only retail. It is the difference between a fixed boat and a lost weekend. Ropes, shackles, blocks, filters, impellers, belts, hose clamps, sealants, fuses, terminals, anodes, antifoul, winch grease, pumps, safety gear, navigation lights and emergency repair materials should be easy to source before the boat leaves the local service zone.
Fremantle Sailing Club’s contractor list includes Yacht Grot for rigging, chandlery and marine support, and Blue HQ, Fremantle Sailing Club, Hillarys, Mandurah and local marina precincts all sit inside wider supply networks. Transport WA says Hillarys Boat Harbour has chandlery and maintenance facilities near the launching ramps.
A Perth yacht should keep a parts file with engine filters, fuel filters, impeller model, belt size, oil type, coolant, anode type, seacock sizes, hose diameters, rope sizes, anchor-chain size, battery chemistry, alternator rating, sail measurements, winch models and electronics manuals.
Weather, sea breeze and local conditions
Perth service planning is weather planning. The Fremantle Doctor is part of local sailing culture, but it can also expose weak engines, old sails, poor reefing systems, tired rigging and lazy departure planning. A short hop to Rottnest or a move from Hillarys to Fremantle can become uncomfortable when the sea breeze fills in hard.
The Bureau of Meteorology publishes the Perth Local Waters Forecast for Two Rocks to Dawesville, inshore from Rottnest Island. BOM also publishes the Perth Coastal Waters Forecast for Two Rocks to Dawesville, offshore from Rottnest Island.
For sailors, this split matters. Inshore waters and offshore waters are not the same forecast. A boat moving around the Swan River, Fremantle, Hillarys, Rottnest approaches and Mandurah needs the correct forecast zone, tide, swell, wind timing and contingency.
A service booking is not a reason to move an unsafe boat. If the engine is unreliable, batteries are weak, navigation lights are faulty, rigging is suspect or the weather is wrong, delay the move or organise assistance.
Ports, harbours and official boating facilities
Perth sailing happens around managed infrastructure, not an informal coastline. Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, Challenger Harbour, Hillarys Boat Harbour, Swan Canning jetties, Two Rocks, Rottnest, Mandurah and other facilities all have management rules and service limitations.
Transport WA says Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour provides safe and convenient vessel accommodation with access to Rottnest, Carnac and Garden Islands. Transport WA also manages pens, harbour moorings and maritime facilities that provide secure vessel accommodation across WA. Swan and Canning public-use jetties are managed by DTMI.
For service planning, this means the skipper needs to check facility rules before assuming they can berth, tie up, unload sails, meet trades, store gear or do maintenance at a jetty.
Sailing clubs as local service intelligence
Perth’s sailing clubs are part of the service network. They are not just racing venues. They are where owners learn which rigger is reliable, which sailmaker understands a class, which mechanic attends a marina, which berth is exposed, which haul-out yard is busy, what breaks on local boats, and how to time a Rottnest trip.
The key Perth sailing-club ecosystem includes Fremantle Sailing Club, Royal Perth Yacht Club, South of Perth Yacht Club, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club, Claremont Yacht Club, East Fremantle Yacht Club, Mounts Bay Sailing Club, Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club, Hillarys Yacht Club, Swan Yacht Club and Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club. South of Perth Yacht Club describes itself as offering sailing, power boating and social activity less than 10 minutes from the CBD. Hillarys Yacht Club says it resides in Hillarys Marina overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Use YouSail Sailing Clubs to connect this guide with club discovery, training, race fleets, community sailing and local knowledge.
Buying a yacht in Perth
Buying a yacht in Perth should start with the boat’s location. A boat at Fremantle can usually be surveyed, hauled, rig-checked, sail-checked and mechanically assessed in the strongest local service zone. A Swan River boat may need a more careful plan for haul-out, rig assessment and ocean readiness. A Hillarys or Mindarie boat may be easier to inspect northside. A Mandurah boat may be better handled through Mandurah’s marina and hardstand network.
A proper Perth pre-purchase process should include survey, haul-out, engine inspection, rigging review, sail inspection and electrical review if the boat has solar, lithium, inverter, windlass, autopilot, refrigeration or complex electronics. If the boat is advertised as Rottnest-ready, offshore-ready or WA-coast-ready, the inspection standard should be higher.
Look closely for UV-damaged sails, old canvas, unknown standing rigging, chainplate leaks, corroded terminals, wet core, tired batteries, poor wiring, old seacocks, unknown antifoul history, propeller damage, saildrive corrosion, engine service gaps, fuel contamination, poor refrigeration, weak bilge pumps and incomplete maintenance records.
Use YouSail Boats, YouSail Marine Directory, YouSail Haul-out / Slipway and YouSail Boatbuilding & Repairs together when evaluating a Perth yacht.
Preparing for Rottnest
Rottnest is the classic Perth cruising test. The trip is close enough that owners sometimes underprepare, but a poorly maintained boat can still get into trouble.
Before leaving for Rottnest, check engine, fuel, cooling, belts, impeller, batteries, charging, VHF, navigation lights, anchor light, bilge pumps, steering, sails, reefing, rigging, mooring lines, tender, outboard, anchor, chain, snubber and weather. Check Rottnest mooring, beach pen or anchoring rules before departure. Rottnest Island Authority provides information on hired pens and moorings, anchoring, beach anchoring and on-shore water points.
A yacht that cannot confidently motor, reef, anchor, communicate and wait out a weather change should not treat Rottnest as a casual run.
Preparing to sail north or south from Perth
Northbound Perth sailors may head toward Mindarie, Two Rocks, Lancelin, Jurien Bay, Geraldton, the Abrolhos, Shark Bay, Carnarvon, Exmouth or the Kimberley. Southbound sailors may head toward Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough, Augusta, Albany or Esperance.
Perth is the service base before the distances become serious. Before leaving the metro area, service the engine, fuel system, cooling, batteries, charging, rig, sails, reefing, steering, autopilot, bilge pumps, seacocks, refrigeration, water system, anchor gear, VHF, AIS, navigation lights and safety gear.
The practical rule is simple. Do not postpone critical service because the chart shows another port. WA coastal distances and weather windows make “fix it later” a risky plan.

Fremantle Sailing Club’s boatyard and contractor information shows the concentration of haul-out, work areas and marine trades.
Where should I haul out a yacht in Perth?
Start with Fremantle if the boat is ocean-going or already near the coast. Fremantle Sailing Club, Blue HQ, Bay Marine and Aquarama all publish lifting, hardstand or slipway-style services. South of Perth Yacht Club is important for Swan Canning boats, Hillarys supports the northern metro coast, and Mandurah is a practical southern fallback.
Is South of Perth Yacht Club useful for maintenance?
Yes. South of Perth Yacht Club says it has water pens, hard standing for trailerable yachts and powerboats, undercover dinghy storage, marine travel lift and slipping facilities, with 145 hardstand bays listed in its boat-facility information.
Where should I look for rigging in Perth?
Start with Fremantle and O’Connor. Rigging WA is Fremantle-based, has a workshop in O’Connor, and says it can access yacht clubs and marinas throughout WA for up-mast work, inspections and complete rigging replacements.
Where should I look for sail repairs in Perth?
Start with Fremantle and Perth metro sail lofts. UK Sailmakers Fremantle offers sail repairs, recuts, furling systems, racing and cruising sails, dodgers, biminis, shade and canvas. OneSails Perth offers sail repairs and design consultation for boats from dinghies to superyachts.
Where should I look for marine diesel service?
Start with Fremantle, Crawley and mobile Perth metro providers. Bluewater Marine Diesel is based in Fremantle, Swansea Marine services Perth and Fremantle boat owners, Collings Marine covers Perth metro yacht clubs and marinas, and Bay Marine services diesel and petrol inboards from Crawley.
What official weather forecast should Perth sailors use?
Use the BOM Perth Local Waters Forecast for Two Rocks to Dawesville, inshore from Rottnest Island, and the Perth Coastal Waters Forecast for offshore waters from Two Rocks to Dawesville.
What Rottnest rules matter for sailors?
Rottnest Island Authority says swing moorings are located around Thomson Bay, Geordie Bay and Longreach Bay. It also says beach anchoring is allowed at Thomson Bay, Longreach Bay and Geordie Bay, temporary moorings are not permitted, and admission fees apply before anchoring within the Rottnest Island Marine Reserve.
Is Henderson relevant for private yachts?
Sometimes. Henderson and the Australian Marine Complex are mainly heavy marine, defence, commercial and sustainment infrastructure, but the surrounding Cockburn and Henderson marine industry can matter for larger yachts, fabrication, coatings, specialist engineering and serious refit work. DevelopmentWA describes the AMC as integral to WA shipbuilding, repair and maintenance, and the City of Cockburn says more than 150 businesses operate within the precinct.
What is the most overlooked Perth service?
Rigging documentation, mooring compliance and electrical documentation are often overlooked. Antifoul and engine service are visible, but old standing rigging, undocumented wiring, weak batteries and poorly understood mooring rules can create bigger problems when the boat leaves the river or heads to Rottnest.
Final Perth sailor’s guide
Perth is a complete sailing-service region, but only if sailors understand the geography. Fremantle is the ocean-yacht service heart. The Swan and Canning clubs support river sailing, pens, hardstand, ramps and local maintenance. Hillarys and Mindarie serve the northern metro coast. Henderson and Cockburn Sound provide industrial and heavy marine depth. Rottnest shapes the weekend cruising standard. Mandurah is the southern fallback and Peel coast service base.
Use Fremantle for serious yacht work, ocean preparation, rigging, sail repairs, diesel, shipwrighting, haul-out and pre-Rottnest maintenance. Use Crawley, South of Perth, Claremont, East Fremantle and the Swan Canning clubs for river-based service and club support. Use Hillarys and Mindarie when the boat is north. Use Henderson when the job is industrial, specialised or large. Use Mandurah when the boat is south or heading down the coast.
Start with [YouSail](/), then move through the right service path:
Marine Directory for service discovery.
YouSail Map for location-based searching.
Marina Service for berths, fuel, storage, marina access and facilities.
Haul-out / Slipway when the boat needs to come out.
Boatbuilding & Repairs for shipwrights, hull, deck, keel, rudder, fibreglass, refit and structural work.
Sailing Clubs for local knowledge, racing, training and community.
Guides and FAQs for the knowledge behind the service decision.
A well-serviced Perth yacht is safer on the Swan River, better prepared for Fremantle sea-breeze sailing, more reliable on the run to Rottnest, easier to manage on the WA coast, and far more ready for the long Indian Ocean passages north or south.
