Albury-Wodonga Sailing Club

Straddling the Murray River border between New South Wales and Victoria, the Albury Wodonga Sailing Club draws its membership from two states without belonging wholly to either — Australian Sailing calls it a true cross-border club. Founded in 1958 and known for most of its life as the Albury Wodonga Yacht Club, it sails on Lake Hume at Bonegilla, roughly a quarter of an hour's drive from the twin cities that give it its name. The club's own chosen nickname, the Little Club in the Country, captures the mood: laid-back, volunteer-run to the last person, and inclined to measure a good weekend by wood-fired pizza and bean bags on the lawn as much as by race results.

Do not mistake the relaxed posture for small ambition. This is the home of Sail Country, the regatta that has taken over the Melbourne Cup weekend each November since 2014 and pulls hundreds of sailors from the two capitals, Canberra and the regional centres in between. Australian Sailing ranks it, by registration numbers, among the top ten regattas in the country. The club also points to a long record of hosting state and national titles, trading on what it calls a unique freshwater experience on one of Australia's largest inland waterways.

Membership stood at 186 in March 2021, ranging in age from eight months to 86 years, with 32 newcomers signed in a single season. Long-serving member Brian Royal has been recognised as Club Person of the Year for his regatta organisation and fundraising, and the club showed what Australian Sailing described as great resilience through the COVID years, inventing new social activities to pull members back together. For inland sailors between the two biggest cities in the country, this is the natural home port.

Keelboats are the point of difference here. Alongside the usual dinghy pathway, the club's accredited Discover Sailing Centre runs multi-day Start Crewing keelboat courses on Lake Hume — a recent format put two full Saturdays together, eight-thirty to three, for twelve hours of tuition — reflecting the trailable yacht fleet that shares the lake with the off-the-beach classes. The centre also delivers accredited powerboat courses and a Sailability program for sailors of all abilities, an unusually complete spread for a country club.

The standard junior entry point is Tackers for kids aged seven to twelve, feeding into the Dinghy Program, and the Australian Sailing youth pathway classes get dedicated backing, with coaching offered for Optimists and Lasers. The engine room is volunteer labour: the centre is run entirely by members, and in the first months of 2021 alone it processed 51 course participants — a healthy throughput for a club of 186 members.

Racing runs on Sunday mornings from early September through to Easter, across dinghies sailed off the beach, catamarans and trailerable yachts. The class list in recent results reads like a survey of Australian small-boat sailing: Optimists at the junior end; singlehanders from Sabres and ILCAs in all three rigs to RS Aeros; two-handed dinghies including Tasars, Pacers, Fireballs, Vagabonds and Paper Tigers; Hansa 2.3s and 303s for all-abilities racing; catamarans from Hobie 14s and Waves through Taipans, Maricats and Vipers; and trailerable keelboats such as the Castle 650 and Noelex 25, through the Farr 6000 and Timpenny 770, to the Austral Clubman 8.

The Murray River Challenge, contested jointly with Yarrawonga Yacht Club from Lake Mulwala, gives the calendar a friendly cross-lake rivalry. And club sailors are not confined to fresh water — Mark Sullivan and daughter Millie recently campaigned the Around French Island Catamaran Challenge in Westernport Bay, carrying the Little Club in the Country's name onto salt water.

Lake Hume is the whole story. Held back by Hume Dam on the Murray, it is the biggest stretch of inland water lying between Sydney and Melbourne; the club reckons it at three times Sydney Harbour's size, while Australian Sailing puts the figure nearer six times at full capacity. Either way, there is room to roam — long beats, reaching legs that run for kilometres, and space for a two-hundred-boat regatta to spread out without a hint of congestion.

The wind here behaves nothing like the coast. With no ocean swell and no dependable sea breeze, the lake is a study in variability, and racing is deliberately scheduled on Sunday mornings to catch the katabatic breeze draining off the hills. Performance coach Mark Tonner-Joyce has described Lake Hume as a really variable environment, explaining that his sailors come specifically to sharpen their wind-reading against that variability. For developing sailors, an inland lake like this teaches skills the coast never will.

The clubhouse sits on the foreshore at Old Weir Road, Bonegilla, with views across the water, and the grounds are set up for the regatta-camping culture the club has made its own: a large grassed rigging and parking area, a concrete boat ramp, unpowered camping on site plus a handful of powered sites, showers and toilets including disabled facilities, and a children's playground. The galley runs a licensed café — The Yardarm — during regattas, backed by a wood-fired pizza oven and barbecue facilities. One firm house rule: no dogs, guide dogs excepted.

The lake itself is shared happily with waterskiers, windsurfers and anglers chasing redfin, yellowbelly, Murray cod and trout, and sandy beaches and foreshore reserves line the shoreline. It is country sailing at its most comfortable, ten to twenty minutes from either of the twin cities.

The club dates itself to 1958, a year stated consistently in its own material and in Australian Sailing's profile, though the names of the founders, the first commodore and the story of the original clubhouse have not survived in any published account. What can be said with confidence is that the club grew up alongside Lake Hume itself, giving the border region's sailors a permanent home on the big reservoir that had reshaped the upper Murray a generation earlier.

For most of its existence the club raced under the name Albury Wodonga Yacht Club, and it still carries that identity in its email addresses and much of its older material. The recent restyling to Albury Wodonga Sailing Club reflects a broader shift in the sport — Australian Sailing was still profiling it under the yacht club name as late as March 2021 — but the culture has stayed constant. The Little Club in the Country tag was already in use in the mid-2010s under Commodore Stuart Richardson, attached to a picture of members unwinding on the Lake Hume shore.

The defining chapter of the modern era opened in 2014 with the first Sail Country, pitched deliberately at the Melbourne Cup long weekend and marketed around a camping regatta experience — wood-fired pizzas, bean-bags scattered on the lawn, country hospitality — rather than big-city polish. It worked: entries climbed until Australian Sailing could describe the event as one of the ten biggest regattas in Australia by registrations, drawing hundreds of sailors from the two capitals, Canberra and everywhere between.

The Murray River Challenge series with Yarrawonga Yacht Club added a second recurring fixture, drawing fleets that run from Optimists and Lasers through Taipans and Maricats to Castle 650s, Hansa boats and Noelex 25s. Through the COVID disruption the hundred-percent-volunteer club held together by launching fresh social activities to reconnect members, and Brian Royal's Club Person of the Year recognition for regatta organisation and fundraising underlined who makes it all run.

More than six decades in, the club has never drifted far from its founding brief.
