Anglesea Motor Yacht Club

Don't let the name fool you. Anglesea Motor Yacht Club is, by its own description, an off-the-beach sailing club, and its home is not a marina but the sand at Point Roadknight on Victoria's Surf Coast. The "Motor Yacht Club" tag is a relic of another era; what actually happens here is dinghy and beach-boat sailing, mixed with fishing, diving and surfing — the four pursuits the club says draw its members to Point Roadknight in the first place. An enthusiastic volunteer committee runs the place, with Kate Stanley serving as Commodore.

The club's rhythm follows the holiday calendar, which makes sense in a town where holiday houses account for two-thirds of all dwellings and the summer population swells beyond ten thousand. Locals, regular holidaymakers and passing visitors are all explicitly welcome, and the clubhouse is actively promoted as a function and booking venue. One of the more unusual offerings is a community membership category: local clubs and community groups pay a nominal $60 a year for daytime access to the clubhouse for meetings and functions, embedding the sailing club into the town's wider civic life.

Then there is the Rusty Anchor Bar, the club's much-loved summer watering hole, pouring daily between 5pm and 8pm from 27 December until the Australia Day long weekend wraps up, then on Friday and Saturday nights through to Easter, with a final flourish on the Labour Day weekend. Members, guests and the general public are all welcomed through the door, and it is where the sailing day gets debriefed and where visitors who will never hoist a sail still get a taste of the club's hospitality.

Anglesea's learn-to-sail offering is built around the summer influx. Most years the club runs its sailing instruction during January, when the holiday population is at its peak and families are on the ground for weeks at a stretch — a sensible model for a seasonal town, and one that lets visiting kids knock over a learn-to-sail course inside a single beach holiday. Details of the current program structure aren't published, so prospective sailors should approach the club directly, but the January block has been a fixture of the club's calendar for years.

Racing runs most Sundays through a season that opens on Cup weekend in November and closes at Easter. The format is relaxed and welcoming: visiting sailors are invited to bring their own boats and join the racing for a small fee that covers insurance, a policy that suits a town full of holidaying sailors who tow a dinghy down the Great Ocean Road behind the caravan. The club says it has hosted numerous state titles and regattas over the years, though it doesn't publish a list, so its competitive pedigree rests largely on that long continuity of Sunday racing on the coast.

Alongside sailing there is a dedicated fishing section with its own program of activities, reflecting the mixed salt-water character of the membership. For a junior or a family, the practical pathway is simple: learn in January, race on Sundays through summer, and spend the rest of the holiday week making the most of Point Roadknight's beach, reefs and surf. It is club sailing scaled honestly to a holiday town, rather than an imitation of a big-city program.

Point Roadknight juts out on the eastern side of Anglesea, sheltering a pocket of beach from the swell that rolls in along this exposed stretch of Bass Strait coast. The club's listed address is the Point Roadknight boat ramp on Melba Parade, and the clubhouse sits above the beach with wide views over the point and beyond — a vantage the club itself calls one of the finest along the Surf Coast. On a summer evening from the Rusty Anchor's deck, with the sun dropping over the headland, it is a hard claim to argue with.

The water here behaves differently from the open coast a few hundred metres away. The point knocks the edge off the south-westerly swell, giving the bay inside it water that is workable for off-the-beach sailing while the surf beaches around the corner take the full force of the Strait. That contrast is the essence of the venue: sheltered enough for learners and family dinghy sailing inside the point, with livelier conditions available as soon as a sea breeze stands in or the tide runs against the swell. The club promotes the beach as equally suited to sailing, fishing, diving and surfing, which is a fair summary of a spot where several coasts meet.

Practical access is straightforward. The boat ramp at Point Roadknight handles launching, and the clubhouse above provides the base for Sunday racing and summer functions. For visitors, the setting does half the recruiting: Anglesea sits on the Great Ocean Road about 110 kilometres from Melbourne, and the combination of an easy drive, a sheltered beach and a clubhouse bar open to the public makes a sailing detour an easy sell for anyone holidaying along the coast.

The club's own account reaches back to 1961, when organised sailing began at Point Roadknight under the Anglesea Motor Yacht Club banner. Beyond that founding year, the written record is thin: the club maintains a photo gallery devoted to its history, but no detailed published chronicle has surfaced, and the names of the founders and the story of how the clubhouse came to be built are not publicly documented. What can be said with confidence is that the club has been sailing continuously for more than six decades and has, by its own account, hosted numerous state titles and regattas across that span.

The name itself is the most visible clue to the club's origins. Clubs carrying "Motor Yacht" in the title were typically formed in an era when powerboats and trailer boats dominated coastal recreation and the sailing side grew up alongside them; at Anglesea the balance eventually tipped the other way, and today the club describes itself plainly as an off-the-beach sailing club with a fishing section attached. The evolution mirrors what happened up and down the Victorian coast through the 1960s and 1970s, as cheap, beach-launched dinghies brought organised sailing within reach of holiday towns.

Continuity is the through-line. The same ingredients that define the club now — Sunday racing through summer, January learn-to-sail, the fishing section, the clubhouse over the beach — have been in place for generations of holidaying families. With a volunteer committee still at the helm and the clubhouse shared with community groups during the week, Anglesea Motor Yacht Club has settled into the role it was always going to play: the sailing heart of a Surf Coast holiday town.
