Beaumaris Yacht Club

"Run by sailors for sailors" is how Beaumaris Yacht Club describes itself, and the phrase fits a club that has kept its focus narrow and its atmosphere easy. This is an off-the-beach dinghy club on the Ricketts Point foreshore in Beaumaris, sailing the waters of Beaumaris Bay on Port Phillip's eastern side. There is no marina culture and no keelboat division — boats come off trailers and dollies on the beach, and the Sunday rhythm of morning training and afternoon racing sets the week.

The social fabric is deliberately simple. Members gather after Sunday racing, regular barbecues punctuate the season and a Christmas function rounds out the year. The club publishes its duty roster, rules and child-safe standards openly, the marks of a volunteer-run family club that takes its obligations seriously without taking itself too seriously. Its hall doubles as a function venue, helping keep the finances of a small bayside club healthy year-round.

One point of clarity matters for visitors: Beaumaris Yacht Club is not the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Squadron — a distinct organisation founded in February 1959 and based at the far end of Beaumaris Bay. The yacht club is the dinghy sailors' club at Ricketts Point, and it belongs to the "Long Beach" group of bayside sailing clubs — alongside Frankston, Mordialloc's two clubs, Chelsea, Parkdale and Carrum — that contest the annual Long Beach Regatta, which Beaumaris hosted in March 2020. It is club racing in the classic Port Phillip mould: local, regular, fiercely friendly and proud of staying that way.

Sunday is the club's classroom as well as its race day. As an Australian Sailing-approved Discover Sailing Centre, Beaumaris delivers full junior and adult learn-to-sail programs on Sunday mornings through most of the season, meaning a family can deliver a child to training in the morning and watch the racing — or join it — after lunch. That same-day structure, instruction flowing directly into club racing on the same stretch of water, is one of the simplest and most effective development models in dinghy sailing, and Beaumaris has built its week around it.

Boat access is handled thoughtfully. Club boats are available for hire, so beginners don't face an immediate purchase, and members actively help boatless sailors find crews and positions — the informal matchmaking that often determines whether a newcomer sticks with the sport or drifts away. The standard junior pathway feeds into club racing on Sunday afternoons, which runs from October through April.

Class-wise, the club's strongest documented tie is to the Sabre: the class's Victorian fleet races at Beaumaris, giving members a direct line into one of the state's most popular single-handed dinghy classes and its district, state and national circuit. Members compete across various classes at district, state and national level, so a graduate from Sunday-morning training has visible targets ahead.

The club doesn't publish a rigid program ladder; instead it offers the essentials — accredited instruction, hire boats, crew-finding and regular racing — and lets the strength of its Sunday culture do the retaining. For a bayside family, it is an undemanding, well-trodden route into a lifetime of dinghy sailing.

Ricketts Point is one of the more interesting pieces of foreshore on Port Phillip's eastern side. The club's address is Point Beach Road, Beaumaris, and its sailing water is Beaumaris Bay, directly off the point. The headland and its reefs define the local geography: the point itself is known well beyond sailing circles for the Beaumaris Bay fossil site and its protected marine environment, a reminder that this coast's sandstone platforms and seagrass beds predate every clubhouse along it by a very long margin.

For dinghy sailors the bay offers open Port Phillip conditions on a manageable scale. The eastern shore takes the full effect of the afternoon south-westerly and the summer sea breeze, delivering reliable afternoon pressure for Sunday racing, while the point and its shallows add local texture — tides moving over the reefs, lighter air in their lee — that rewards sailors who learn the water intimately. The club runs a live webcam over the sailing area, a small but telling facility: locals check the bay before they commit, the way sailors have always read this coast, just with better tools.

Onshore, the club is self-contained. Facilities include a race control tower overlooking the course area, change rooms and toilets, boat storage, a canteen and a large hall that the club hires out for functions. Everything sits on the foreshore within a short walk of the launching beach, which is the whole point of an off-the-beach club: no shuttling between marina and course, no tenders, just boat, beach and bay. For the Long Beach group regattas that rotate through the district, it is a natural host — exposed enough to test visitors, familiar enough to favour the locals.

According to a national sailing-club directory, Beaumaris Yacht Club dates to 1950, when a group of local sailors set the club up on the Ricketts Point foreshore to bring organised sailing to the district. The same directory account records that the club's first headquarters was a tent — the standard-issue beginning for post-war beach clubs up and down Port Phillip, when enthusiasm ran well ahead of infrastructure.

Four years later, in 1954, the founding members built the clubhouse themselves, and that 1954 building, extensively renovated and modified across the decades, remains the club's home today. Founders' names and a detailed chronology aren't publicly documented, so the directory's outline is the most complete published account available.

The tent-to-clubhouse arc places Beaumaris squarely in the post-war boom of Port Phillip dinghy sailing, when affordable plywood boats and new suburbs along the bayside turned beach sailing into a mass participation sport. The club grew within a dense neighbourhood of similar clubs along the Long Beach shoreline, and that district identity became a durable part of its life: the Long Beach group — Frankston, Mordialloc Sailing Club, Mordialloc Motor Yacht Club, Chelsea, Parkdale, Carrum and Beaumaris — still contests its inter-club regatta annually, and Beaumaris hosted the 2020 edition on 22 March of that year, one of the last major gatherings before the season was interrupted.

Through it all the club has kept its original shape: dinghies off the beach, Sunday racing, volunteer management and a family membership. The 1954 clubhouse has absorbed its renovations the way good club buildings do, and the program — training in the morning, racing in the afternoon, barbecue after — would be instantly recognisable to the sailors who pitched that first tent on the foreshore three-quarters of a century ago.
