Hastings Yacht Club

Hastings Yacht Club does more than sail: it helps run a harbour. On the western shore of Western Port, sixty-two kilometres south of Melbourne and just off the Frankston–Flinders Road, the club is the gathering point for the district's yachting fraternity, cruising and racing sailors alike, and an integral part of the town — it opens its facilities to community groups, supports the local Volunteer Marine Rescue, and its members serve as key stakeholders in the affairs of Hastings Harbour.

The club has been here since 1957, and its newsletter, The Dolphin, keeps the membership looped in. On the water the club casts a wide net: Saturday racing for yachts, trailer-sailers and multihulls, the Summer Bight and Summer Paddock series, a winter off-the-beach dinghy program, and a Sailability operation with purpose-built boats for sailors with disabilities. The multihull contingent has punched well above local level — four Hastings crews contested the 2019 Australian Yachting Championship.

Ashore, the scale of the place surprises first-time visitors: a three-thousand-square-metre secure boatyard with mast-up storage, a slip that handles monohulls and multihulls to twenty tonnes, a floating pontoon with power, lighting and fresh water, and a clubhouse with bar, function room and kitchen. Hastings itself is Western Port's administrative and commercial centre and the Mornington Peninsula's main industrial area, which gives the club a character different from the peninsula's resort-side clubs — a working harbour's yacht club, practical, busy and community-minded.

Visitors are welcome, though the practical advice is to watch the tide, and the Annual Dinner and Awards Night each June anchors the social year.

The program that says most about Hastings Yacht Club runs on Thursday mornings. Fortnightly through the season, from ten until half past twelve, the club's Sailability sessions put people with disabilities on the water in several purpose-built boats — an operation sustained in part by the club's Bunnings fundraising barbecues and embedded in the same clubhouse that hosts the racing fleets.

It is the clearest expression of the club's community-harbour identity, and it sits alongside a structured junior pathway: the Junior Sailing Program takes children aged eight to fifteen through a six-week course with qualified Australian Sailing instructors, covering boat parts, steering, tacking and gybing, tides, knots, the basic racing rules, navigational marks and capsize recovery.

The training fleet runs from single-handed dinghies up to larger multi-person trainers, including 'Harry Who', a Savage Dolphin that bridges the step from dinghy to bigger-boat sailing.

Racing development follows the club's unusual spread of fleets. The winter off-the-beach series — the 2014 edition drew around thirteen boats each second Sunday — splits juniors, often eight to ten kids, from the adult fleet, with the Laser the largest class and smaller rigs for the juniors, while other dinghies and beach catamarans race on handicap. Saturdays belong to the yachts, trailer-sailers and multihulls, with the Summer Bight and Summer Paddock series providing multiple heats across the season, supported by the patrol boat HS11 and the club's seven-metre Whittley, Shamrock.

The proof that the pathway works sits at national level: at the 2019 Australian Yachting Championship, Hastings multihull sailors Geoff, who skippered the Corsair Sprint 750 'Tiger'; Shaun Fishley and Tim Pepperell, aboard the Corsair 'Bare Necessities'; and Craig Uthank, with the Farrier F22R 'SKnot', all flew the club's colours.

Hastings faces the broad, tidal reaches of Western Port, a bay of deep channels, mudflats and mangroves quite unlike Port Phillip over the peninsula's spine. This is a tidal harbour in the practical sense: visitors are advised to check tide levels, because water can be limited at low tide, and racing plans bend around the tides as a matter of course. Locals describe the winter series conditions with rueful economy — "either blowing a gale or a drifter" — which at least guarantees variety, and the club keeps its own weather station feeding hastingsweather.com.au.

The shore base at 1 Marine Parade is unusually well equipped. The clubhouse holds a downstairs bar operating under a limited licence, with a barbecue area, and an upstairs function room with an adjoining modern kitchen, plus a separate committee room and male and female showers and change rooms. Behind it stretches a boatyard of roughly three thousand square metres under twenty-four-hour video surveillance with FOB entry: mast-up storage for trailer-sailers and multihulls to about thirty-two feet on their own trailers, off-the-beach dinghy and cat storage, and a slip yard.

The slip launches and retrieves monohulls and multihulls up to twenty tonnes via a motorised traverse serving four rails, with maintained cradles for out-of-water maintenance — serious infrastructure for a town club. A club tractor handles launching and retrieval, operated only by trained members. On the water, the club's assets include the seventeen-foot patrol runabout HS11, the seven-metre Whittley cruiser Shamrock as flagship, and an extended floating pontoon wired with lighting, power and fresh water to the dockside.

The Volunteer Marine Rescue's presence on site rounds out the harbour picture.

Hastings Yacht Club was founded in 1957, in a town that had already reinvented itself several times. The settlement began as King's Creek, and was renamed around 1860 — depending on which account you prefer, either for Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of India, or for Hastings in Sussex. By the time the club formed, the town had grown into Western Port's administrative and commercial hub, and would become the Mornington Peninsula's principal industrial area — a working port rather than a holiday one. That setting shaped the club.

From the beginning it drew the district's cruising and racing sailors into one body, and it embedded itself in the life of the harbour rather than apart from it — a relationship that continues today through its support of the local Volunteer Marine Rescue and its role as a stakeholder in harbour affairs.

The fine grain of the early years — the founders' names, the first clubhouse — is not recorded in the club's published material, but the outline of the decades since is written in the facilities themselves: a boatyard that grew to three thousand square metres of secure storage, a slip capable of lifting twenty-tonne multihulls, patrol boats, a floating pontoon and a clubhouse with bar and function room built for a membership that uses it hard.

The newsletter The Dolphin has chronicled the seasons, and the club calendar settled into its current shape — an Annual Dinner and Awards Night each June, Saturday racing for the bigger boats, winter dinghy sailing, junior training and, in recent seasons, the Sailability program. Members have carried the burgee to national level, notably the multihull crews at the 2019 Australian Yachting Championship, and the club now offers AED and CPR training to its members.

Nearly seven decades on, Hastings remains what a harbour town needs its yacht club to be: practical, open and woven into the waterfront.
