Lake Wellington Yacht Club

At midnight on a March long weekend, dozens of trailer-sailers slip off a dark Gippsland shoreline and point their bows east across Lake Wellington, bound for the far end of the lakes system. They are racing the Marlay Point Overnight Race, and the club that invented it — Lake Wellington Yacht Club — has been sending them into the night for more than half a century. The race has been called the Sydney-Hobart for smaller yachts and remains Australia's only overnight contest for trailer sailors, and it defines this club the way no single regatta defines most.

The club itself stands at Marlay Point, on Lake Wellington's western shore — this being the westernmost of the Gippsland Lakes — roughly twenty kilometres out of Sale. It is a trailer-sailer and off-the-beach club whose season stretches from October to April, blending social days with racing, and whose fleet list reads like a survey of Australian family sailing: Hartley 16s, Explorer 16s, RL24s, Castle 650s, Noelex 25s, Timpenny 650s and Boomerang 20s alongside Mosquitoes, Lasers, Sabres, Hansas and assorted catamarans. Nobody needs to arrive with a boat — newcomers are invited to simply ask at the club, and something will be found for them to try.

Affiliated with Australian Sailing, the club is openly volunteer-powered, welcoming helpers for race-day duties and the big overnight event, and its culture runs to shared casserole lunches on presentation day. For sailors who like their water wide, their nights long and their clubs unpretentious, Marlay Point has been a fixed point on the Gippsland calendar since 1960.

The club's most distinctive program doesn't happen on Lake Wellington at all. Since 2000, Sailability has operated under Lake Wellington Yacht Club auspices on Lake Guthridge in Sale, sailing hand-operated Hansa 2.3 dinghies so that people with disability can experience independent sailing. Participants from Sale Specialist School and the George Grey Centre sail weekly during Terms 1 and 4, and Sale Scouts book in occasionally — more than two decades of quiet, consistent delivery that makes this one of regional Victoria's longest-running accessible sailing operations.

Back on the big lake, the club's learning model is deliberately informal. Rather than a branded course pathway, newcomers are offered boats to try or borrow — the club's standing invitation is simply to ask — and then folded into a season that blends social sailing and racing from October through April. That mixed program lets a new sailor cruise when the breeze is pleasant and test themselves in club racing when ready, surrounded by trailer-sailers and off-the-beach boats of every description.

Racing members operate under a safety-conscious framework: Category 7 and off-the-beach safety declarations are required, and a land-based duty officer monitors on-water activity by radio through each sailing day, so even casual Sundays have an organised safety net. The club also plugs into the wider Gippsland circuit, with links to the Victorian Eastern Region Interclub Regatta and to neighbouring clubs at Metung, Port Albert, Loch Sport, South Gippsland and the Gippsland Lakes — giving members a natural ladder from local Sundays to interclub competition. And looming over everything is the Marlay Point Overnight Race itself, the ultimate development target: a genuine night passage through the straits, achievable in an ordinary trailer-sailer, that has introduced thousands of sailors to after-dark navigation.

Marlay Point is a sandy strip on the western shore of Lake Wellington, equipped with a jetty and boat ramp and reached by about twenty kilometres of road north-east from Sale via Bengworden. Lake Wellington is the westernmost and least settled of the Gippsland Lakes — a broad, shallow expanse of fresh-to-brackish water where the horizon stays wide and the breeze comes clean off farmland and wetland. For trailer-sailers it is near-ideal home water: room to stretch, depths that suit shallow keels, and a shoreline base where boats can be launched, rigged and parked without fuss.

The club's racing waters extend well beyond the home lake. The overnight race sends fleets east across Lake Wellington and through McLennan Straits into Lake Victoria, threading the channel system that links the Gippsland Lakes — waters that shift from open-lake sailing to narrow, current-affected straits where local knowledge counts. Shallow approaches have been an occasional challenge: ahead of the fiftieth running of the race, Gippsland Ports dredged the water off the clubhouse and ramp to keep the fleet moving freely.

Ashore, the clubhouse is built to welcome everyone. A ramp runs from the disabled car park to the upper storey, with an accessible toilet and shower on the ground floor, and an upstairs kitchen and barbecue area flanked by two meeting rooms; the building is also available for hire for community events. The club opens on Sundays from nine to five through the season, with sailing called off in bad weather — a practical rhythm for a venue that sits exposed to Gippsland's changeable skies, where a still, hot afternoon and a hard south-westerly change can arrive within hours of each other.

Lake Wellington Yacht Club began in 1960, growing — as the club summarises it — out of a foreshore shed into the complex that stands at Marlay Point today. Its defining creation arrived within the decade. The race traces back to a general committee meeting in August 1968, where the idea was floated as a way to foster interest in night sailing; sources differ on the first running, some dating the race from 1968 while the race's own history records the inaugural Marathon Inland Yacht Race, sailed over the March long weekend of 1969, when 29 yachts started at midnight off Marlay Point and 27 finished at Metung Yacht Club.

First line honours went to Bill Shand's Flying Fifteen Reliance 11, with Reg Hill's Hartley TS16 Saetta taking handicap honours.

The early course ran through McLennan Straits into Lake Victoria, then threaded McMillan Straits and crossed Lake King into Metung; from 1976 onwards the finish moved to Paynesville, where onshore facilities could cope with the numbers. Those numbers became extraordinary: entries topped 500 nearly every year for a decade, peaking at 680 boats in 1987 — billed at the time as arguably the largest yacht race in the world — though that year's race was ultimately cancelled after postponements. Participation estimates across the race's history vary by source, from around 4,000 boats and 11,000 sailors in the first fifty years to figures several times larger, but by any count the event introduced a generation of trailer-sailer owners to night racing.

The fiftieth race, on 10 March 2018, drew more than 200 yachts and 600 crew and supporters and added a classic division for boats over thirty years old. Change had been coming: a 2013 review amid declining entries resolved to keep the race alive, and a 2017 partnership with Gippsland Lakes Yacht Club saw that club take major organising responsibility from 2019 under Lake Wellington's guidance. The race — and the club — sail on.
