Loch Sport Boat Club

Not every club on the Gippsland Lakes measures itself in championship pennants. Loch Sport Boat Club is a volunteer-run community boating organisation on the shore of Lake Victoria, and its charter is broader than racing: the club serves as the managing committee of the Loch Sport Safety & Water Sports Centre, champions safe boating, and exists just as much for social fellowship and marine recreation as for competition. Sailing sits inside that mix alongside powerboating, fishing and a busy events calendar that runs most of the year.

The club was started by holidaymakers in January 1965, and that holiday-town character never left it. Family-based activity has been encouraged from the beginning, and the membership structure reflects it, with categories for families, singles and youth, plus a social tier that opens the door to the Boaties Bar for those who prefer their sailing from a deck chair. Membership also brings access to the club rooms and registration with Australian Sailing.

Sailors who do want a start line get one. The club has hosted the Eastern Region Interclub Regatta for Victorian Gippsland clubs, and its annual Lakes Challenge draws trailable yachts onto Lake Victoria. The clubhouse itself tells the story of the place: after nearly three decades without a permanent home, more than sixty volunteers built the centre with their own hands. That practical, pitch-in spirit defines the club today — a small lakeside community organisation where boating of every kind is welcome, and where the same people who run the bar on Saturday night are likely to be laying marks on Sunday morning.

Loch Sport Boat Club is upfront about what it is: a boating and social club that runs sailing events, not an accredited learn-to-sail school. There is no formal Tackers pathway, junior squad or Discover Sailing Centre here, and the club makes no pretence otherwise. What it offers instead is a full and varied calendar of on-water activity through most of the year, and a genuine open door for anyone who wants to get afloat.

The centrepiece for sailors is the Lakes Challenge, the club's event for trailable yachts, which gives trailer-sailer crews a rare chance to race on the sheltered expanse of Lake Victoria. Attracting enough trailer sailors to make the start line busy has been an ongoing effort — a familiar challenge for clubs away from the metropolitan fleet — but the event persists on the calendar as the club's signature sailing fixture. Around it sit regatta hosting duties that bring outside fleets to Loch Sport: the club welcomed the 34th Australian Mosquito Catamaran National Championships in January 2006, hosted the Eastern Region Interclub Regatta in 2015 and again in 2022, and is scheduled to stage the 2026 Hobie Victorian state titles across the Labour Day long weekend, an event supported by Australian Sailing's Sail Our Way initiative with discounts for female crews.

For newcomers, the practical pathway runs through membership rather than courses. Joining brings Australian Sailing registration and insurance for registered activities, and the club's boating culture means experienced members are generally on hand to help a novice rig, launch and learn the lake. Joining also brings insurance cover when taking part in registered club activities. Young people and families are explicitly catered for in the membership categories, and the social program around the Boaties Bar gives new arrivals an easy first point of contact before they ever step on a boat.

The club rooms stand on the foreshore at 1 Charles Street, Loch Sport, a small township on the narrow strip of land between Lake Victoria and Bass Strait, roughly 200 kilometres east of Melbourne. It is a lakefront site in the most literal sense: a large car park, a nearby jetty and a boat ramp sit within a few steps of the clubhouse, and a live weather camera on the club's website lets members check conditions before making the drive.

Lake Victoria is one of the three great expanses of the Gippsland Lakes system, and it is generous sailing water by any regional standard — wide, open and largely free of the moored-boat slaloms and ferry traffic that complicate racing closer to Melbourne. The fetch is long enough that a fresh breeze builds genuine chop, and the conditions record from the 2006 Mosquito Nationals tells the story: racing at Loch Sport that January ran the full range from light and variable airs through to breezes above twenty knots, with one day blown out entirely when the wind proved too much for the fleet. Sailors who learn to read this water become versatile quickly, because the lake rarely hands out the same race twice.

The Loch Sport Safety & Water Sports Centre, which the club manages as its Committee of Management, doubles as a community asset available for hire by other groups, so the foreshore site functions as the township's boating hub rather than an exclusive enclave. For visiting sailors, the practical package is hard to fault: ramp access, rigging space, parking for cars and trailers, and a clubhouse with a bar looking out over the course area. Loch Sport's remoteness is part of the appeal — this is destination sailing in the best Gippsland tradition.

The club dates from January 1965, when a group of holidaymakers in the little township decided their shared interest in boats deserved formal shape. In the early years, water skiing was the headline act — long ski races down the lakes to Paynesville were among the club's first organised events, and they set the tone of energetic, family-oriented fun that has carried through ever since. Sailing dinghies arrived later, and trailer sailors joined the fleet during the 1980s as that style of boat grew popular across regional Victoria.

What makes Loch Sport's history remarkable is how long the club operated without a roof of its own. For twenty-seven years activities shifted around the foreshore as circumstances allowed: an old marina, a disused hall, the small jetty beside the shop and even a patch of ground behind the amenities block at the deep-water jetty all served as temporary headquarters. The club secured a lease over its current foreshore site in October 1992, though rezoning delays meant the paperwork was not signed until September 1999. Clearing work began in 1997 and an ATCO shed served as a makeshift base while the permanent building took shape.

The centrepiece of the modern club is the Loch Sport Safety & Water Sports Centre, and its construction is the defining episode in club lore. When partner organisations pulled out of the project, more than sixty-four volunteers took on the build themselves, starting in November 2000; the finished centre was officially opened in September 2001. The community's faith in the club has been repaid with security of tenure: a fresh twenty-one-year lease on the site commenced in July 2020. On the water, the club's proudest hosting moment came with the 34th Australian Mosquito Catamaran Nationals in January 2006, when forty-two competitors on twenty-nine boats raced on Lake Victoria.
