Merricks Yacht Club

Some clubs announce themselves with a marina full of masts; Merricks Yacht Club announces itself with a tractor on a sandy beach. Tucked at the end of Merricks Beach Road on the eastern shore of Western Port, facing across the water toward Phillip Island, this is a small club centred on off-the-beach dinghy and catamaran sailing in a holiday township — the kind of place where sailing, fishing and socialising share the same stretch of foreshore and the same cast of characters.

The sailing itself is described by locals as friendly but competitive, and the club has produced its share of capable, successful sailors across the decades — a return out of all proportion to its modest scale. Racing runs on Saturdays from November through April, and the current class list is remarkably broad for a club this size: Melges 14s, Lasers, 470s, Sabres, Impulses, Pacers, Optimists, A-Class catamarans, Mosquitoes, Castle 650s and Explorer 16s all appear on the water. The club is also the holder of the Westernport Challenge trophies for off-the-beach yachts — silverware it notes, with evident relish, it has won "again."

What rounds out the picture is the social fabric. Social members are welcome, the club serves as a gathering point for residents and holiday makers alike, and Thursday-evening drinks at 5:30 have become an institution — the recommended first port of call for any newcomer, along with Saturday race days. Membership applications go before the committee, normally endorsed by two existing members, so Thursday drinks is genuinely how the front door works. In an era of large professionally run clubs, Merricks remains the older model: a beach, a yard, a bar table and a fleet.

The junior sailing program is the beating heart of Merricks' training life — an active summer program catering to newcomers and experienced young sailors alike, sustained by what the club calls a keen gang of junior sailors. In a township of this size, that program depends on cooperation, and the club works with Westernport Yacht Club, its near neighbour on the bay, to deliver junior sailing classes through the summer months. The arrangement is a sensible piece of regional resource-sharing: two small clubs pooling instructors, boats and young sailors so that both junior fleets stay viable.

The Optimist appears on the club's current class list, giving beginners a proven first boat, and from there junior sailors feed into a fleet mix that offers genuine variety as they grow — Pacers for two-up sailing, Lasers and Sabres for singlehanders, and catamaran options in the A-Class and Mosquito. There is no Tackers accreditation, Discover Sailing Centre status or Sailability program listed; instruction here runs on the traditional club model of experienced members passing on skills during the summer program rather than through a formalised national syllabus.

Racing from November to April doubles as the development pathway. Saturday club racing on a small, uncrowded stretch of Western Port gives young sailors room to make mistakes and learn race craft without the pressure of a thirty-boat metropolitan start line, and the adults racing alongside them are the same people coaching and crewing on other days. For families weighing up the club, the practical rhythm is simple: juniors learn through summer, the whole fleet races on Saturdays, and the week's sailing talk gets rehashed at Thursday drinks.

The annual social and sailing program, published each season, sets the full calendar out in advance so holiday-maker families can plan their summer around it.

Merricks Beach sits on the eastern side of Western Port, roughly 65 kilometres south of Melbourne and 13 kilometres south-west of Hastings, in the quieter corner of the Mornington Peninsula's bay-facing coast. The club occupies the sandy beach at the end of Merricks Beach Road, where the foreshore reserve adjoins Merricks Creek as it enters Western Port near the Coolart wetlands — a landscape of tidal flats, mangroves and birdlife that feels a long way from the busier Port Phillip side of the Peninsula.

Sailors should understand what the venue is and is not. There is no concrete ramp, no sheltered launch and no mooring facilities; boats go in and come out by tractor and winches across the sand, a system the club has operated for decades and one that keeps the fleet compact and self-reliant. Yard space is limited, so priority goes to the yachts of active sailors, and motorboat fishermen are gently redirected to Westernport Yacht Club nearby. Personal watercraft are banned from launching at the club at all times — a firm rule that keeps the beach's low-key, sail-first character intact.

The water itself is Western Port at its most agreeable for small boats. Facing Phillip Island, the beach looks across a broad, tide-worked bay where the summer sea breeze provides reliable afternoon sailing, and the relative shallows and tides of Western Port reward local knowledge — reading the movement of water over the banks is part of the sport here. The setting's natural values are part of the experience too: sailors share the district with the Coolart wetlands' birdlife and the creek's estuary, and a day at the club tends to end with sand between the toes rather than a marina walkway.

For off-the-beach sailors who value uncrowded water and a working beach over polished facilities, Merricks is difficult to beat.

Merricks Yacht Club began in 1964, when the holiday township of Merricks Beach was filling each summer with enthusiastic fishermen and sailors who needed somewhere to keep their boats. The club started life as a small yard on the foreshore serving exactly that need — a practical solution for a beach community rather than a grand sporting project. Records of a yacht club on the Merricks Beach foreshore reserve date from that same year, anchoring the club firmly in the township's post-war holiday era.

The identity of the founders has been lost to the club's recorded history, but the shape of what they built is clear from what persists: a volunteer-run beach club, oriented to sailing first, embedded in the social life of a small coastal settlement. The Thursday-evening drinks tradition, the committee-endorsed membership process and the published annual program all speak to a club that has run on personal relationships rather than paid administration for its entire existence.

On the water, the fleet tells its own history. Classes sailed at Merricks in earlier eras include the Paper Tiger catamaran, Hobie, Sharpie, 420 and Sparrow — a roll call that tracks the fashions of Victorian off-the-beach sailing across the 1960s, seventies and eighties. Today's list has evolved with the times, adding the Melges 14 and keeping the Optimist, Pacer and Sabre at the centre of junior and adult racing.

The long-running cooperation with Westernport Yacht Club on junior training reflects the same neighbourly pragmatism, and the Westernport Challenge trophies for off-the-beach yachts — currently held by Merricks, as the club enjoys pointing out — keep a competitive thread running through Western Port's small-club scene. Six decades on, the 1964 formula remains essentially unchanged: a yard on the sand, a summer of racing, and a club that belongs to its township.
