Metung Yacht Club

Metung is one of those Gippsland Lakes villages where the water is the main street, and Metung Yacht Club sits at the centre of it. Based on the Bancroft Bay shoreline at Metung, some 260 kilometres east of Melbourne, the club has been sailing on Lake King and Bancroft Bay since 1934 — ninety years of continuous club life on the same sheltered waters. It is a sailing and boating club in the full sense: the membership spans sailors and power boaters, and the calendar mixes racing and cruising events with twilight sailing and social cruises.

The club's reputation in Australian keelboat circles rests on its championship hosting. The Prince Philip Cup — the Australasian championship of the International Dragon class — came to Metung in January 2018 and returned in January 2024, when Nick Rogers claimed his thirteenth Cup title. The International Flying Dutchman national titles and the East Gippsland Etchells Championships also run from the club, and Dragon sailors speak warmly of the venue's flat water and reliable summer sea breezes. A growing fleet of classic wooden boats, Couta Boats among them, adds a heritage flavour to the scene.

The physical club matches the on-water credentials. A refurbished clubhouse with a bar open Wednesday through Sunday looks over protected decking toward the bay; the marina has been recently updated with floating pens, and members also have use of the Shire hard-stand with a three-tonne crane and launching ramp. Volunteers power an active junior sailing program that has run for nearly half a century. Commodore Peter Kanat leads a committee that keeps the club's rhythm steady: racing, cruising, juniors and a bar that functions as the village's maritime social room.

Few regional clubs in Australia can point to a junior sailing program that has been running for almost fifty years — Metung's can, and its design is deliberately accessible. The club owns and supplies the boats its junior students sail, keeping costs to a minimum so that children can take part regardless of gender or financial circumstances. That single policy, sustained across decades, explains much about the club's place in the Metung community: sailing here has never depended on a family first buying a boat.

The pathway is well defined. Beginners start in the OziOpti, the unsinkable Optimist-style dinghy that has become Australia's standard junior trainer, and progress to the two-person International Cadet — a class designed in 1947 and still raced in more than twenty countries, which teaches crew coordination, spinnaker work and tactical thinking in a way singlehanded boats cannot.

The program operates from November through to Easter, with sessions commencing in October and running on Sundays from ten in the morning until two in the afternoon, using Bancroft Bay directly in front of the clubhouse for coaching and junior racing. It culminates in a combined regatta that brings together young sailors from Metung and Sandringham Yacht Club — an exchange that links the Gippsland juniors with one of Port Phillip's major clubs.

Beyond the junior stream, the club runs one-design regattas for the Etchells and Dragon keelboat classes alongside mixed-design racing, and the Metung Easter Youth Regatta appears on the Australian Sailing Victoria calendar. Twilight sailing and social cruising fill the week for those who prefer their afloat time unpressured, and power boating members are woven into the same program. There is no Tackers accreditation or Sailability listing on record — Metung's training identity rests squarely on its own long-running, club-funded junior system rather than the national syllabus products.

The village of Metung occupies a peninsula in the heart of the Gippsland Lakes, with Lake King stretching away to the west and Bancroft Bay lying to the east — and the yacht club stands on the bay's shore, looking directly across the water it races on. For sailors, the geography is close to ideal: the course areas on Bancroft Bay and Lake King can be watched from the clubhouse shore, and the water is free of the congested traffic that plagues courses near the big city harbours.

Conditions have earned endorsements from exactly the right judges. International Dragon sailors — a class famously particular about its venues — describe Metung as offering relatively flat seas and steady summer sea breezes, a combination that suits both high-performance keelboat championships and beginners in training dinghies. The enclosed lakes keep ocean swell out of the equation, while the summer sea breeze arrives with enough regularity that afternoon racing can be planned around it. Bancroft Bay, immediately in front of the clubhouse, doubles as the junior coaching ground, so parents can watch a whole lesson unfold from the deck.

The club's waterfront infrastructure is unusually complete for a regional club. The marina has been recently renewed with floating pens, replacing the older jetty arrangements, and members also have access to the Shire hard-stand dry storage facility, complete with a three-tonne crane and launching ramp — practical assets for a fleet that includes Dragons, Etchells and classic wooden Couta Boats that need careful handling.

Ashore, the refurbished clubhouse offers inclusive facilities, parking and protected decking, with the bar trading Wednesday to Sunday. Metung itself grew as a boating village — a new jetty in 1978 and a marina in 1979 tracked the rise in private craft — and the yacht club remains its nautical anchor.

The club was founded in 1934, in the depths of the Great Depression, and its first meeting took place in Joe Bull's log cabin. It began life as the Metung Sailing Club, and its early character was shaped by a bold commitment to the international Snipe one-design class: the first commodore, Bill Borthwick, had four Snipes built for members, and by 1938 around ten of the dinghies were racing regularly across Bancroft Bay and Lake King. The Bull name runs through the whole story — founder Joe Bull's father, Joseph Bull, was a Metung boatbuilder whose yards turned out 293 boats over more than six decades, served twelve years as commodore and became a Life Member.

War intervened. The club slipped into recession in the early 1940s, with most members away in the armed services, and its revival came through an unlikely benefactor: an unrelated Regatta Club, set up to promote speed boating, had bought the present five-acre site back in 1950 for £1,000, when the ground was barely more than a hill and a swamp, and later passed the lease, together with the balance of its funds, across to the re-formed Metung Yacht Club. Club rooms went up on the site in 1959, a jetty followed in 1960, and a marina eventually replaced it, helped along by Victorian premiers Dick Hamer and Henry Bolte, both of whom holidayed at Metung.

The class list across the decades reads like a survey of Australian sailing — Snipe, Payne-Mortlock Canoe, VS and VJ, Gwen 12, International Star, YW Diamond, Flying Fifteen, Moth, Flying Dutchman, International Dragon, J24, Etchells and Couta Boats among many others. The modern era's crowning moments are the Prince Philip Cup regattas of 2018 and 2024, the latter combining the Ted Albert Memorial Trophy with the Cup series and delivering Nick Rogers' thirteenth title. Approaching its ninetieth year, the club founded in a log cabin now hosts national and Australasian championships on the same bay its first Snipes raced.
