Portarlington Sailing Club

On the north-facing coast of the Bellarine Peninsula, where the shoreline looks straight across Port Phillip toward the Melbourne skyline, Portarlington Sailing Club has built a reputation as one of the region's friendliest entry points into the sport. The club sits at Point Richards, a short hop east of the town pier, and runs the kind of program a community club should: racing every Sunday from September to April, a Winter Series for the committed, and an open door for visitors, who can sail for ten dollars a boat under Australian Sailing's SailPass arrangements.

The fleet reflects how people actually sail in this part of the bay. Monohulls and catamarans race off the beach, while trailable yachts get their own cruising days, so a family can graduate from a borrowed training dinghy to a weekend trailer sailer without changing clubs. The club is volunteer-run and affiliated with Australian Sailing, sailing under the PT prefix, and it leans on its neighbours in the best way — through Sail Bellarine, a cooperation with clubs such as Indented Head Yacht Club that shares volunteers and events across the peninsula's sailing strip.

Who sails here? Juniors working through the Green Fleet on Sunday mornings, adults learning to sail later in life, long-time racers chasing series points, and a steady trickle of Melburnians who keep a boat on the Bellarine side of the bay. The town itself is a north-facing coastal community famous for its mussel farms and its ferry link across the bay, and the club matches that unpretentious, working-waterfront character. It opens from 11am on sailing days, the kettle goes on, and by early afternoon a mixed fleet is out on some of the most sheltered racing water in Port Phillip.

State championship hosting is the clearest marker of where Portarlington's training leads: in March 2022 the club ran the combined Victorian Fireball, 505 and FD State Championships, a two-day event that put its race management and its water in front of three demanding high-performance fleets. That a volunteer club of this size could hold three state titles at once says much about the depth of experience on its volunteer roster — race management roles are actively recruited from the membership, and sailors here grow up around competent course-setting.

The formal entry pathway is backed by national accreditation as a Discover Sailing Centre, and beginner courses for both juniors and adults run right through the season — the first Start Sailing course for under-18s, and adult classes spanning Start Sailing 1 and 2, typically on Sunday mornings — and each February the club throws open try-sailing sessions branded Give Sailing A Go, which in 2022 ran across two weekends. From there, the Junior and Green Fleet program takes over on Sunday mornings from nine-thirty through the season, giving young sailors a low-pressure bridge between courses and the start line.

Beyond the formal pathway, the club keeps its offer broad. Trailable Cruising Days give the bigger boats a social program alongside the racing, and the racing calendar itself mixes an Aggregate series, short-course events, a Pursuit Series and the Winter Series, so sailors at different levels can find a format that suits. The Charlie Horvath Memorial Race keeps a link with the club's past on the calendar each year. And through Sail Bellarine — including a shared volunteers weekend with Indented Head Yacht Club in 2021 — members gain access to a wider peninsula network of events and training support than any single small club could mount alone.

Point Richards gives Portarlington something money can't easily buy: a lee shore in the bay's prevailing summer winds. The club's racing water lies along the Bellarine's sheltered north-facing shore inside Port Phillip, where the peninsula blocks the south-westerly fetch and the racing area stays comparatively flat even when the rest of the bay is white-capped. For off-the-beach classes — and especially for juniors — that protection is the difference between a confidence-building afternoon and a survival exercise. Southerlies still reach the course, of course, and sea-breeze days give the fleet decent pressure; but the water forgives mistakes in a way open coastlines never do.

The shoreside setup matches the sailing. Launching is off the beach, with boat storage and registration handled at the club, so members can leave dinghies and trailer sailers on site across the season rather than towing each weekend. The clubrooms sit on Point Richards Road with the sailing area directly in front — spectators and duty crews can follow the racing from shore, and the walk from car park to water is short enough that rigging up is a pleasure rather than a logistical exercise.

Portarlington town, a few minutes west, supplies the after-race dimension. This is the Bellarine's mussel-farming capital and the terminus of the ferry service across the bay to Melbourne, so the foreshore has a working-maritime feel rather than a resort gloss. For visiting sailors from the peninsula's other clubs, or Melburnians considering a base on the quieter side of the bay, the arithmetic is appealing: sheltered racing water, a club that charges visitors ten dollars a boat, and a town with good food at the end of the day. It is no surprise the Bellarine's clubs cooperate so readily — the water itself is the shared asset.

The club began with a public meeting at the Portarlington Football Club rooms on 14 September 1969, when local sailing enthusiasts formed what they first called the Portarlington Aquatic and Sailing Club. The broader name didn't last: in 1972 the word Aquatic was dropped, and the club settled on the title it carries today. The early years were mobile ones. The club sailed first from Seal Rocks, east of the township, then shifted to the Portarlington Pier, before making its third and lasting move in 1972 to Point Richards — the site that finally gave the fleet room to grow.

Growth, in the club's case, meant breadth rather than size. The Geelong community directory describes the fleet as spanning monohulls, multihulls and trailable yachts, a mix that has held for decades and that shaped the club's racing formats, from aggregate pointscore to pursuit racing. Milestones accumulated quietly. The Charlie Horvath Memorial Race was established to honour a much-missed member and remains a fixture. When the 2021-22 season brought the combined Victorian Fireball, 505 and FD State Championships to Point Richards, it marked the club's arrival as a venue trusted with serious class racing.

The half-century was celebrated in November 2021 — a little later than the strict anniversary thanks to the times — with a gathering at the Portarlington Golf Club that drew members old and new. Around the same period the club formalised what it had long practised, earning accreditation as an Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Centre and deepening its junior and adult learn-to-sail programs. From a football-club meeting room in 1969 to a state-championship venue with an accredited sailing school, the arc has been steady and unspectacular in the best way: three homes in the first three years, then fifty-plus seasons of continuous Sunday sailing on the same sheltered reach of the Bellarine coast.
